Pozzuoli, a town in the northern part of Naples, is an area that has been suffering from Bradyseism, a threatening geological phenomenon that consists in the gradual uplifting or sinking of the soil due to underground volcanic activity or pressure changes. The nearby Solfatara volcano, part of the Campi Flegrei volcanic system, shows intense geothermal activity with sulfur gas emissions and fumaroles.

In 2024-2025, renewed bradyseism caused significant ground movements, damaging buildings and infrastructure. Gas emissions also raised serious health concerns, with cases of asthma and chronic bronchitis reported among the residential population.

Locals interviewed by Corriere del Mezzogiorno in April 2024 said:

“The ground is rising under our feet. It’s no longer just a geological curiosity; it’s a real threat to our safety. Many no longer feel safe in their homes.”

Experts, such as geologist and volcanologist Francesco Ricciardi, attribute the phenomenon to increased underground magmatic activity and hydrothermal system recharging. While closely monitored, the situation may worsen, posing further risks to the local community.

Lack of Green Spaces

The shortage of public green areas worsens air quality . This specific urban area in the historic center of Naples is the most polluted since it lacks parks and gardens that could help absorb CO2, release oxygen, and reduce airborne pollutants in this highly trafficated crossroad.

Expanding green spaces would bring multiple benefits:

	1.	Improved air quality through natural filtration.

	2.	Promotion of physical activity, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and obesity.

	3.	Psychological and social benefits, such as reduced stress and enhanced community interaction.

	4.	Energy savings and lower urban temperatures by mitigating the heat effect during summer months.

The Link to Rising Cancer Rates

Long-term exposure to polluted air is linked to a rise in respiratory cancers, particularly lung and laryngeal cancers. Studies show that Naples and its surroundings has higher cancer mortality rates compared to the national average. A report by the Italian National Institute of Health revealed a 6% increase in lung cancer incidence in the region over the past decade, with bigger rates in industrial and high-traffic areas.
