Takes place in the 1950s and is narrated by a young man named Holden Caulfield. Holden doesn't
specify his location throughout the story, but he makes it clear that he is undergoing treatment
sanatorium. Holden is sixteen and wanders around before the holidays. He starts off at Pencey high
school. He has already been expelled from multiple schools. he talks about a guy named Ackley. Ackley
sounds gross and with no boundaries. He also speaks about his feeling towards his roommate Stradlater
who spent his evening with Jane, a girl caulfield himself holds much affection for. It is easy to notice it
bothers him a lot. After Holden questions stradlater if whether him and Jane done anything he becomes
angry and pins holden down leaving him a bloody face. After the incident he becomes annoyed and
decides to go into the city. She meets a mom of one of his classmates, the mom is unaware of how her
child really is so holden doesn't ruin his image, instead makes up lies about how great he is. Holden goes
to a bar after debateng in his head, he gets mad because the server doesn't serve him liquor because he
is not of age. He flirts with three different women. Holden spends the rest night doing existential things
yet Salinger is able to capture the essence of everything he does. He does things like writing to Phoebe
and phoning his teacher.
