My understanding of the American dream is complicated. The way I see the dream is messy and unorganized. I see the dream being unfair and more ideal for some rather than less fortunate. The dream I understand is very complicated and unfair in the end. To me the dream is only achievable for those who are considered normal in our American society.

ARTICLE: "The American dream is dead and barely existed to begin with" By Kaleigh White
This article goes into heavy detail of why the American dream was hard to comprehend and achieve while being apart of a colored family. The author goes into great detail of how why and when the American dream was born for white people and when it died for colored people. The author explains that BIPOC families could never truly achieve the dream because the dream was born into the racist time of the century. I understand now that the dream was constructed in one of the mots segregated and racist times, the 50's. The dream was the white man bringing home the money and the wife and children staying at home. This dream was born into misogyny and racism. This supports my thesis by elaborating why the dream is only achievable for certain groups of people.

Interview with my dad Gerardo Saavedra

My Dad has accomplished the American Dream to an extent. While he did build a life in America he feels as if he didn't accomplish enough for himself and his family due to him being from another country. In him I see how systematic oppression and incorrect ideology have hurt his true American dream; Making sure him and his family live happily and comfortably. He is not making six figures a year as he had hoped but he is no longer living in poor conditions or having his children live in poor conditions as he did in his childhood. My biggest takeaway was, “ I say the American dream is a 50/50 chance of achieving. A person can work as hard as possible and still not achieve it. If a person can’t make their personal dream they often give up and end up having a boring and sad life”. While my father does not live a sad life he doesn't live extravagantly as he had planned.

In this chapter Reyna begins Junior high. Starting 6th grade had many milestones for her. One being ending ESL. She states, "Finally, I will no longer be in a corner of my classroom as I learned English". This implies that the ESL kids were usually put aside in the classroom rather than being taught together at once. While this seems very insignificant, Reyna was able to feel herself and not segregated from the rest of the class for being an English learner. Her short time dream was to be like the other kids. Her American dream was to fit in with a normal class and she finally achieved it with becoming an english speaker and sitting in class with other American kids.

THE AMERICAN DREAM ONLY APPLIES TO CERTAIN GROUPS OF PEOPLE

With this thesis I will elaborate on how the American dream is very one-sided and unfair to many groups. The dream is only achievable to those in society who are deemed "normal citizens" in America. I hope to show you that the American dream is truly unfair to BIPOC due to unequal opportunities, systematic racism and oppression, and unfair circumstances within our society.

A dream deferred by Langston Hughes

" Does it (the dream)stink like rotten meat?

      Or crust and sugar over—

      like a syrupy sweet?"
In this poem Langton Hughes talks about dreams. To him dreams can be anything. But in these lines dreams are feelings. He depicts how a dream can expire and stink, metaphorically he means a dream can become old and rot away if not seized. He also mentions dreams that can be successful and sweet. With the syrupy sweet line he imagines when a dream succeeds and basks in greatness for years to come. In this poem Hughes beautifully describes how dreams can be bitter, expire, become sweet, or be dried out like a raisin in the sun.
