Another thing she created was a "Please Read" bin so that the students could add books they want the teacher to read out loud to the class when the time is appropriate. This makes it so that the students are invested in the reading when they contributed to the materials available.

The second teacher used sticker charts with rewards once they were filled so the students didn't feel like reading was a chore. She says that she uses "positive peer pressure" to get the excitement level up with her students. The only thing I would make sure of is that if I used sticker charts, I would tell my students that reading more books than another student doesn't make them a better reader/student. This is so that students don't get discouraged if they don't have as many spaces on their charts filled out.

She also makes sure to have a variety of different books for her students to choose from so that they are able to find reading material that engages them. Another way she uses choice to motivate and engage her students is by giving them free choice time. They are allowed to pick a place in the classroom and changing these spaces to make the areas more interesting to the students.

The second teacher gives an "umbrella topic" for students to write about, but they get to choose more specifically what they write about. Students are motivated to write when they find interest in the topic they are writing about. She also gives them choices on what to read for their homework. Even though the students have to read each night, they get to choose what to read and report on.

Choice is incredibly important for students' literacy development. Choice is what creates a "spark" in a student when they are deciding what to read or write about. They aren't being told exactly what to write about and what they should be reading, which keeps them motivated to complete the assignment (and do well on said assignment.) Choice not only engages and motivates students, but it also builds their confidence in their skills when they are using their interests to learn.

Providing choice also supports diverse learning styles and allows students to connect personally with what they read and write.

She talks about how she reads at home and shares that with the class, which makes kids see reading as something fun people actually enjoy. For reading, she lets them pick from a wide variety of books and even choose which book club they want to join. She also allows free choice time where students can pick a spot in the classroom to read, which makes it more fun and comfortable.

For writing, she gives an overall topic but lets students decide what angle or specific idea they want to write about. This way, they’re still meeting the assignment goals but have the freedom to connect it to something they care about.
