It proliferates in floodplains in the Amazon, the Orinoquia and the neighboring eastern Andean foothills at less than 900 meters above sea level, forming large populations, the Morichales, which constitute a particular type of wetland and ecosystem that attracts fauna in the fruiting season. As with many species of palm trees, it is a tree that forms extensive plant associations on the banks of rivers, called morichales or aguajales, a very thick and nourished vegetation, almost impenetrable. The «moriche palm» is one of the emblematic trees of Venezuela, and it is also so for the Achuar people who have this palm as their symbol. In 1800 the great German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt studied it, and thanks to its great natural properties, he named it the tree of life, as the perfect symbol of nature as a living organism

indigenous peoples profess a tree known as the "tree of life" and often referred to as Palma de Moriche.

 Legend of the indigenous Tamanaco has it that there was a general flood of which only a man and woman survived on the advice of Amalivaca, father of all men of the Caribbean nations.  Amalivaca urged this couple to take refuge at the top of Mount Tamacú, and while they were up they tossed moral palm fruits over their heads and on top of their heads, which gradually became new men and women.  .

Of the mentioned floral species, the moriche palm is considered "vulnerable" in Venezuela because its palm frond is intensely harvested and because of habitat destruction for agricultural, grazing and petroleum activities.

Also, structures created out of Moriche (representative palm of the region) are found there and ancestral communal houses known as Malocas are recreated.
