Native Americans have always had a unique culture that influenced their education. Normally right about this time of year they would be preparing for a ginormous hunt that they perform every year. The Cherokee used to love this hunt, there was nothing better than hunting anything that moves in the Appalachians of Georgia. Although in the middle of preparing the white men found something of theirs. Something they tried to buy, steal, threaten for, and begged for, Gold. They tried everything at first, the Cherokee refused constantly. The couldn’t refuse the last though. They came with guns and weapons they had never seen before. They offered them to let them have the gold and they can stay, but they must attend white schools and follow their cultures. The Cherokee had no choice but to accept this offer. The parents were no longer allowed to teach the children and were no longer allowed to teach them their culture. When the Native American children arrived at the school it was immediate how obviously they didn’t want them there. If the children brought their own cultured food it was taken away and they were given “civilized” food. They cut their hair to “civilize” it and gave them harsh punishments when they did anything wrong. From glancing the wrong way to breathing too loud they would be punished from a hard slap on the wrist to no food or water for he day. We interviewed these children and most, very surprisingly, felt very lucky and happy that they were even allowed in the white school. “They have taught us a lot. Even if they want to take away our culture, they are very smart people.” One kid said while hurrying to school. Another kid who was severely punished that day said “The teachers love to quote Thomas Jefferson by saying “I predict future happiness for Americans” they think that discourages us but we’re Americans, they may call us indians, but we’re still American.” These children have more hope than their parents, almost all the parents had no clue what they could do, our if they should even do anything. When interviewing all the parents only one was optimistic about this situation. He said “Everything on the Earth has a purpose, every disease has a herb to cure it, and every person a mission. These kids will support us when they grow up, they will become smart and mentally strong. They will find a way to save us and we will live happily.” This man’s name is Mourning Dove, The Chief. The Cherokee culture is being disrupted right now and they are fighting not with weapons but with their minds. By keeping their culture alive and keeping the children in cultured homes, their culture may live through these tough times.

“The federal government's...opening the first off-reservation boarding school” to Abedabun this was the best news he heard. He was a student at the new school named Avenue, Abedabun was very excited because it was his first time going to school and everything science, Math, literature. The father of Abedabun, Sr.Mares said “Finally the government take actions of their words, and do something about the school.” Sr. Morales said that because the government had been saying about a new school for Native Americans for years about three and half years.

The reason why the government finally did the school was because they came to the conclusion that if they have more educated people, the country would cause more powerful and they can grow faster as a country. The problem was that they had none of teachers that want to work in the Avenue School, because of where the school was located, they didn't have the same lifestyle as the one they are use to.

Except Ms. Adsila, she had the fabulous opportunity to get an education being a Native American, she was 23 years old. She left the reservation to receive a better education and be able to help her people. She was willing to help the Native American because she know the struggle of been Native Americans, and getting a education. The good thing was that she is very intelligent and knows a lot about Science, Math, Literature, and even a little bit of Spanish. Ms. Adsila had a friend named Ms. Zusan they knew each other since they were in elementary school, so Ms. Adsila tried to convince Ms.Zusan to go teach at Avenue School. After a long conversation Ms.Zusan accepts going to the school. When the first day of school came, nothing was easy but they fought against those struggles and after a month everything was going fine.

With the help of these two excellent and nice teachers we have great aspirations and hope that our children's education will be better. That our future will see a better day and our children will thrive in the white settlers world.
