He would like me to be amazing in math and be able to achieve many things. I think that when parents put pressure on their children it all depends on what the child things. For example, I would like to be an engineer so when my father tells me he would like me to become an engineer it makes me believe that I have potential to become one. On the other hand, some children have a different job in mind so they might not like when their parents do this.
- Five qualities that I admire in others are loyalty, reliability, honesty, trustworthiness, and maturity. I admire when someone is loyal because then you know that they will always be there for you. I think that when someone is reliable then you are able to trust them much better which results in a stronger bond. I think honesty is key because without it you cannot have any trust with the person. Education, in other words, and not earthly possessions, is the ultimate legacy, the only thing that cannot be taken away.” Here he expresses that the greatest thing a child can keep from their parent is the education they give to them. Education is something that once learned one can never loose the knowledge they have in their head. Parents might leave their children material things but something could happen at any moment that could ruin those material items. On the other hand, being educated leaves with knowledge that can never be taken away from you. This relates to the theme of the book being hope since even if things go wrong one might lose everything but they will always have their memories and knowledge. 

In the second quote of the epigraph, Miss Freida Joy Riley articulated that ‘‘all I’ve done is give you a book. You have to have the courage to learn what’s inside it.” Here she notes that she has given us the tools but that it is up to us to decide if we would like to use them.  This suggests that even though people might give us the right tools they can never force us to do things without us choosing to do it. It is up to us to decide what we do in our lives. Furthermore, one has to be willing to try new things and go explore. This relates to the theme of hope since you should hope to find what you truly need to learn. Hickam, Jr., in the beginning Sonny views the idea of his community as something he is proud off but after he sees Sputnik, he realizes that he wants to get out of the town and make something out of himself like Dr. von Braun. Coalwood is all Sonny knows so he has never imagined anything different in his life. He comments that he “was proud to live in Coalwood. According to the West Virginia history books, no one had ever lived in the valleys and hills of McDowell County before we came to dig out coal” (4). Here Sonny states that he is proud of his hometown but only because no one had ever lived like he did. He is proud of how Mr. Carter came and founded the town of Coalwood but he does not take interest in it while he is living in it. Overall, he is proud of how the town came to b but not what it is today. On the other hand, after Sputnik passes by and he hears about Dr. Von Braun, he realizes that he wants to go work with him and get out of the town. To do this Sonny decides “I was forming aa rocket club to be called the BiG Creek Missile Agency (BCMA), named in imitation for von Braun’s ABMA” (77). Here Sonny announces that he wants to build a rocket worthy of getting a national trophy and then he will be able to leave Coalwood and Join Dr. von Braun. After he heard what Dr. von Braun does for a living he then decided that he wants to work with him. In order to do that he needs to leave his community, get into college and only then he will be able to try joining Dr. von Braun. Even though Sonny grew up in Coalwood, once he saw what was out there in the world he wanted to make a name for himself.
