This poem is by Amy Lowell, who is from the late 1800s and early 1900's, so some of the terminology may be unfamiliar to you. She is an American poet, so the language will be easier to read. You may need to look up some of the words and phrases in order to better understand the poem.

This poem is by Langston Hughes and is similar to some of his other poems that you may have read. He was a poet during the Harlem Renaissance during the 1920's. While this poem is the shortest one, it is packed full of meaning. Remember shorter does not always mean easier!

This poem is by John Reed, alive during the late 1800's and early 1900's. He was born in the United States, but helped form the communist party, was accused of treason and fled to what is formally known as the Soviet Union. His poem is on a page with another poem, so make sure you only focus on his poem.

1. After reading through your poem, begin to locate the figurative language used by your author. You will most likely need to read the poem several times.

2. Record the text on your chart including the line number, which will be helpful later. Also, write the figurative meaning as used in the context of the poem. If you need help, use the figurative language sheet I gave you (also attaching it).

3. Discuss with your partner the overall theme or message the author was trying to convey through the poem.

4. Individually, write a paragraph stating the theme/message and explaining how you know this. Use textual evidence to support your ideas. You may have the same ideas and examples as your partner, but you should each write your own paragraph.

1. Begin discussing with your partner ideas for a commercial. You may have already thought of ideas while you were reading.

2. In order to create your commercial, you will break it down into scenes (or parts) that will include pictures and descriptions of what is happening. This is called a storyboard.

3. Choose if you would like to make an online storyboard or draw it yourself on paper. See the website provided or the pdf. If you want to draw, I will give you a paper copy of the pdf.
*Note: you will have to create an account for storyboardThat if you don't already have one.
