One of the most powerful and relevant concepts presented during the congress was the idea of an Indigenous curriculum grounded in the knowledge of the Earth. This perspective offers not only a profound educational approach but also a timely and urgent message. In an era marked by the increasing degradation of our relationship with the planet, the wisdom of Indigenous peoples—rooted in respect, reciprocity, and harmony with nature—emerges as a vital guide for rethinking how we live, learn, and lead.

It was a reminder that true education must honor and integrate ancestral knowledge systems, especially those that teach us to care for the Earth and respect the dignity and rights of original peoples. This is more than a curriculum—it’s a call for a cultural and spiritual reawakening.

My understanding of global citizenship from the Soka perspective has evolved from a conceptual appreciation to a lived commitment. Initially, I understood it primarily as a call for compassion, dialogue, and human rights. But through deeper engagement—especially during the recent congress—I came to see that Soka global citizenship is not just about international awareness, but about a profound sense of responsibility toward all life.

It means cultivating wisdom to discern what contributes to peace, courage to act against injustice, and compassion to embrace diversity with dignity. I’ve realized that global citizenship, in the Soka view, begins with an inner transformation—a revolution of the heart—that leads to outward action for the betterment of society and the planet. It’s no longer an abstract ideal for me; it’s a daily practice rooted in interconnectedness, hope, and a deep commitment to human dignity.

My views on how GCE can be applied have definitely expanded. I had a loose understanding the concept, and I think I came in seeking a very concrete prescriptive framework. What I got, however, was an appreciation for the variety of teaching styles, school settings, and educational philosophies that GCE can be applied to. It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation. For that, I am grateful.

Dedication to inner transformation really inspires me to confront the difficult and complex realities at my school. I have been thinking about the word courage throughout this conference. From listening to the experiences of educators from around the world engage in their own inter transformation, I feel reassured that I will be victorious. And I can’t wait to share how this will inform my next activities to promote and develop innovative approaches to global citizenship education based on Ikeda’s vision.

I’ve come away from this conference with a real desire to help merge some of the cliques and rifts at my school, both between faculty and administration, as well as between teachers. There are a lot of moving parts at my school, and it can feel overwhelming at times (as well as isolating). Again, following Ikeda’s example (and others), I want to put aside my ego and instead be an agent of connection, bringing people together. After all, at the end of the day, it’s about the students.
