How fortunate for Waynflete to have enjoyed and benefitted from your personable nature and steadfast dedication for thirty-seven years! You are the consummate role model and educator. (I remember observing one of your classes and respect how naturally and supportively you related to students.) Thank you for your pleasurable friendship during the two years that I lived in Portland and experienced the profound privilege of being your colleague at Waynflete.

Congratulations on retirement, TC! I had the pleasure of being an advisee of TC throughout upper school, and I have so many memories. From Sporcle quizzes, calculus class, and days spent reading to Reiche students. TC was a very important mentor to me and helped me make some important decisions at Waynflete and after graduation. Your sense of humor but seriousness was the perfect blend. I think everyone who knew TC benefited from his teaching and advice but also his presence, and Waynflete should be eternally grateful. Be sure to ask him about his “HD LEMNG” license plate on his blue Ford Fiesta (do you still drive that?) if you haven’t yet!

Best,

Jake Armentrout ‘19

Tom, you were ‘the new guy’ when you taught me calculus in 1987. Although my class was a bit unruly and unfocussed, we were also serious students with high expectations from our teachers. You weren’t intimidated, and you quickly won us over by offering a curriculum that balanced our personal interest with the learning material. As I read through the comments from other former students I can see that you had the same impact on them as you had on us. Waynflete is fortunate to have found you and benefitted from your many many contributions to the community over the passing years. I’m sure that retirement will be an opportunity for you to start something new, and I have no doubt that whatever that might be ‘the new guy’ is going to be just as successful! Thanks Tom, for being such a great teacher and inspiration to so many of us! -Rob Christie

I look back fondly on being in your homeroom (in the early-to-mid 90s) and truly appreciate the way you treated all of us students as peers, making learning engaging and enjoyable. Although it would be hard for me to say I had a favorite teacher during my time of middle school and high school at Waynflete, TC will probably always be my most memorable, and probably the one I most closely related to and identified with. The imprint he left on me and literally generations of Waynflete students will never be forgotten. From his mid-20s, with his young-teacher enthusiasm, which is how I remember him, to the old-hand and veteran that he is today, hundreds and hundreds of young people have been touched by his care and guidance.

...is what I would write on every evaluation form for the 3 years of high school where TC was my math teacher. Further context: TC told a story in class about how a previous student once described him as being "sarcastic," "but in a good way." To which, with a deadpan expression and a tone of audible confusion, he looked at our class and said (sarcastically? To this day I'm unsure), "What does that mean?" So, naturally, on every evaluation from that point forward, I wrote the exact same thing due to my (our?) dry sense of humor.

After graduating in '13, I didn't go the college route. Instead, I'm now a construction worker (a union electrician, but a construction worker nonetheless). In an ironic twist of fate or whatever, my endless fascination and curiosity with math and logical/critical thinking (QED) has turned me into an anomaly: the jobsite nerd.

Nearly every day at work, I use trigonometry and geometry to bend conduit for electrical installations. Cosecant, tangent, theta, radians, pi, measuring chords to determine bend radius and arc length...and that's just the mechanical side. Electrical theory? Sine waves, phase angles, vector addition, natural logarithmic curves for transient signals in capacitive/inductive circuits, voltage vector and phasor diagrams, logic diagrams for motor control and PLC wiring, the ever-present square root of 3 critical for 3-phase circuit calculations, the backbone of the global electrical grid (shout out to the OG Tesla)...but alas, I digress.

"If you don't recognize something, turn it into something you do recognize." -TC

"How to sculpt a horse from a solid block of material? Chip away everything that doesn't look like a horse." -TC

"Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 14...14--hey, that's the square root of 2!" -TC

"One way to remember the square root of 3 is that George Washington wasn't the 3rd president of the United States, and he was born in 1732." -TC

"I always thought lambda looked like an amputated pi." -TC

Thanks for being not only my favorite math teacher but also my favorite teacher! In an era where critical thinking seems to be a lost skill, I'd like to think that your emphasis on "original thinking" when it came to geometric proofs was one of the early stepping stones that laid the foundation of who I am as a 30 year-old man. And most importantly, thanks to you, I will always remember that the square root of 3 is 1.732.

Take it easy TC ✌🏼

"Quod Erat Demonstrandum"

(Also, did you guys know he was on Oprah?

TC

Where to begin….

My….just a few years (compared to Tom’s 37) working at Waynflete were filled with many great memories! Enjoying my time with EC definitely is at the top of the list! That said, getting to know Tom during my tenure was a close second! I remember so many times as I sat in the school bus waiting for students to climb on board, I would see Tom walking to his next assignment with his always present casual gate and all encompassing gaze. He would nod, smile and speak as he moved along. I always felt very special if he spotted me and said hello. If you ever had the privilege of riding with Tom to an event or activity, I discovered early on that listening to Tom speak and recount his many stories was much more fun than speaking myself. His Campbell Irish lineage stories were amusing! His stories of his sports coaching times were a hoot! His stories of his annual baseball pilgrimage were amazing! Playing golf with Tom was a joy, perhaps the only time I felt I was on an even playing field with him!

I’m very hopeful that I see TC at the annual Golf scramble 2025! Gee, I wonder who it will be dedicated to. LOL

And I hope he can make it to the lunch gathering afterwards….at my joint!

All the best Tom!

Bill Fenderson

Congratulations on a well-earned retirement and thank you for everything you've done for Waynflete students over the years. I have fond memories of the many hours I spent in your office, between math classes (I still love geometry thanks to your class), advising, and loitering between classes and during lunch. Your ability to make math classes joyful and fun for even the most math-averse students is something I am forever grateful for, as someone who has loved math since your classes. Thank you for your care, attention, and guidance as a teacher and an advisor - I feel extremely lucky to have been your student. Wishing you a wonderful retirement!

-Hannah Espy '06

Thank you TC for all you have done in leading me to be a math teacher. I remember so much from the many years I had you as a teacher and it is fun to realize that so many of these memories get passed on to my students. References to Joe Pythagorus, writing in capital letters, countless facts about pi, polynomial long-division, memorizing the squares up to 25 and the powers of two up to 2^20, the list seems endless.

One of your quotes that I pass on to my students is "You will not remember the lessons your teachers teach you, but you'll remember the jokes they tell." With this wisdom in hand, I try to make sure I have a strong collection of jokes and to ignore the eye rolls that come from telling the same joke in consecutive courses.

You're always welcome to stop by my classroom to observe my attempt at replicating the joy and brilliance you brought to every class.

Thanks for everything,

Tim Whittemore '00

I was having lunch with David Vaughan yesterday, and he referred to this Padlet while we were talking about the concept of “legacy.” I said, “What Padlet?” He goggled, but shared the link. I guess I only read the first line of an email last winter. Oops. My bad, but only in that I haven’t been reading these lovely messages and responding to them all along. Lori and I took a hike on the trails of Westbrook, ME (our new “home” town) this morning and then I got to read all of these at once. Yes, I teared up, and no, I didn’t get a swelled head. What wonderful memories! In my 38 (not 37 - apparently whoever counted didn’t have me as a math teacher) years at Waynflete, I LOVED working with all of you, bending your brains, navigating real life, laughing, and learning (we always were BOTH learning). Thank you for recording so many rich memories, and I have many more of you all as well. Now I’m off to do research for a book, or tutor, or finish my basement (Ariq, are you an electrical engineer in Portland area?), or volunteer at Maine Historical Society, or quilt, or travel somewhere interesting. Pie at my house next March 14?
