Europe has a lot of cities that try to be more sustainable. They mix clean energy, good public transport and green spaces. From all the rankings and studies, three cities are at the top: Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Helsinki. Copenhagen is super famous for bikes and the city is designed to make that easy and safe. It also uses a lot of clean energy and has big goals to become carbon neutral. Amsterdam is also focused on cycling and sustainability. The city is small, so people don’t need to travel far. It’s a bit crowded, but anyways it’s still one of the most sustainable cities in the world. Finally, Helsinki. It uses technology to improve things like transport and energy use, and it’s very organized when it comes to environmental policies. It’s also been ranked as one of the most sustainable places for tourism.

Another strong example is Hallstatt in Austria.

Hallstatt became famous online because it looks like a perfect postcard village, with mountains, a lake, and traditional houses. It was shared widely on Instagram and even inspired a replica in China, which made it even more popular. After that, tourist numbers increased massively in a very short time.

At first, this brought economic benefits to the village, but soon problems started to appear. The small streets became overcrowded, especially when tourist buses arrived. Locals felt that the village lost its peaceful atmosphere, and daily life became harder because of constant visitors and traffic. The environment was also under pressure due to increased waste and heavy foot traffic in a very small area.

This shows the same hype-and-decline cycle seen in digital trends: something becomes viral because it looks “perfect” online, but the real place struggles when too many people try to experience it at once. Hallstatt is a clear example of how social media popularity can lead to over-tourism and sustainability problems in physical destinations.

Amsterdam is also very sustainable, with a compact design and canals that make short trips easy without cars, and a strong culture of cycling even though it is a very touristy and busy city. Helsinki, on the other hand, stands out for its use of smart technology in transport and energy systems, along with very organized environmental policies that make it one of the most efficient and sustainable cities in Europe.

I suggest moving around Paris by using the public bikes that you can find on the streets. No only they do not pollute but it also helps making a little bit of sport. As team green suggests, a car can produce 100g of CO₂ for every kilometer it makes. By using bikes we would generate almost 0g of CO₂ while moving around the city so its the best mean of transportation.

Braies lake became really popular on the internet because of its great views. Therefore, tourism increased massively and thousands of people started going to the lake to take pictures. This caused a lot of traffic in the local area and the generation of incredible amounts of trash that polluted the near by zones. Consequently, the access to the lake was banned to stop the saturation of people.

Doing a tour by bus might be comfortable, but have you ever thought about how much CO2 a single trip emits? On average, a bus produces around 0,03–0,07 kg of CO2 per passenger per kilometer. For example, an hour tour with 30 kilometers with 55 passengers can generate 50–70 kg of CO2 in total. Choosing a bike tour reduces emissions %100, offering another way to explore the city.
