The letters of Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, known informally as Pliny the Younger, offer an inside look at the life of Ancient Romans in the first century CE. Through the eyes of this man, students will learn about the daily life and concerns of ancient Romans while studying the history of these tumultuous time periods; Pliny’s letters cover everything from master-slave relationships to the rise of Christianity in Ancient Rome. Students will continue to develop critical reading and thinking skills through class discussions, quizzes, and written exercises. The text is Fifty Letters of Pliny. This course is open to students who completed LA424 or the equivalent.
