To be invisible means that you are unnoticed. Maurice is invisible in many ways because people don’t really notice him. For example, when Laura first met Maurice she doesn't even pay attention to him. To her he was just another panhandler. Laura is invisible to Maurice in some ways also. They live two different lives. Laura can relate to some things in Maurice’s life, while Maurice can’t relate to anything in Laura’s life. Laura is also older and lives a totally different life than Maurice. To Maurice, Laura is just another woman passing by. Laura is no more invisible to Maurice than Maurice is to Laura.

When I think about what does it mean to be invisible I think that it means you either don’t pay attention to someone or do not acknowledge someone. Being invisible does not necessarily mean that you can’t see someone it just means that you are complacent to the fact that the people are created different and they all could offer something you did not know of before. People give so many opportunities’ and can ideas that were not given to you before you met them. In my personal opinion being invisible is not being not seen, it is being complacent to the things around you and not utilizing the resources and people around you. In the book invisible thread Laura and Maurice are invisible to each other because when they first met they did not know much about each other and were ignorant to each other’s backgrounds. Laura was invisible to Maurice because he did not know of the hardships and the struggles that Laura experience. Maurice was Invisible to Laura she was unaware of the struggles and hardships that Maurice had gone through as well. Although Laura and Maurice were not physically invisible to each other they were never the less invisible all the same because of the ignorance and lack of knowledge from their backgrounds. They could not see past their physical appearance and the judgments made by first observations. It was not until later in the book that we find out and see that Laura and Maurice became non-invisible to each other and they learn more about each other.

Being invisible can be a very bad thing. In Maurice’s case he was invisible from the general public because everyone glazed over him be he was just another homeless person on the New York streets. Laura glazed over him at first but then something made her stop and turn around and take him to lunch and that’s what sparked their relationship. In Laura’s case she was invisible because she was just an average New Yorker. She blended in with everyone else and was therefore invisible. She really found herself when she met Maurice. They created a strong bond that eventually started diminishing over the years when they were split apart but they then rejoined and brought the relationship back from the ashes.

To be invisible means to go unnoticed, or to feel like you are the only one around. Maurice and Laura are both invisible to others. Maurice would be more invisible because he didn’t have much of a family who cared that much about him. People would most likely just look at him in the streets and look away. Laura might feel invisible because she feels that her work goes unnoticed. She helps many people, but since there is so many people, others might think that nothing is being done about the situation.

To be invisible means to be alone. You will feel like you only have yourself. Many people do not notice you. In some ways Laura and Maurice are very much alike. Both Maurice and Laura had childhoods where they felt invisible. Laura’s dad was very abusive when she was younger. She felt like she was not important because her dad portrayed those feelings. Maurice had an abusive childhood as well. His mom was not on her feet. She was addicted to drugs. Maurice was out on his own begging for money on the street. Nobody noticed him on the street expect for Laura. Laura was invisible as well because she was all alone that day. She did not have anyone either and then she noticed Maurice. It comes to show that many people feel as if they are not important. They think that nobody recognizes them when in reality there is always one person who will.

An Invisible Thread Meaning

Invisible means that someone or something cannot be seen despite technically existing. Laura and Maurice's relationship was invisible because Laura could not entirely understand or hear what Maurice was saying because his voice was drowned out by all of the loud sounds of New York City. Laura and Maurice are invisible to others due to starting out as two people who did not know each other, yet they were going out to lunch. "This thing we were doing--going to lunch, a couple of strangers, and adult and a child--it was weird, and we both felt it" (page 7). Their experiences, both individually and together reflect our society by being busy with other things and not always paying attention to others. However, had Laura not stopped at the beginning to help Maurice, he would not have gotten help, their friendship would not have come to be, and neither would have the events that have occurred throughout the book. Laura began being a mother to Maurice taking him out for lunch instead of simply giving him money like he asked. "'Excuse me lady, do you have any spare change?' This was the first thing he said to me, on 56th Street in New York City, right around the corner from Broadway, on a sunny September day. And when I heard him, I didn't really hear him. His words were part of the clatter, like a car horn or someone yelling for a cab. They were, you could say, just noise--the kind of nuisance New Yorkers learn to tune out. So I walked right by him, as if he wasn't there. But then, just a few yards past him, I stopped. And then--and I'm still not sure why I did this--I came back. . . . He stretched out his palm toward me, and he asked again, 'Excuse me, lady, do you have any spare change? I am hungry.' . . . 'If you're hungry,' I said, 'I'll take you to McDonald's and buy you lunch'" (pages 1-2). Finally, Laura mentioned that it was fate that brought her and Maurice together and made them friends in the first place. "Looking back all these years later, I believe there was a strong, unseen connection that pulled me back to Maurice. It's something I call an invisible thread. It is, as the old Chinese proverb tells us, something that connects two people who are destined to meet, regardless of time and place and circumstance. Some legends call it the red string of fate; others, the thread of destiny. It is, I believe, what brought Maurice and me into the same stretch of sidewalk in a vast, teeming city--just two out of eight million, somehow connected, somehow meant to be friends. Look, neither of us is a superhero, nor even especially virtuous. When we met we were just two people with complicated pasts and fragile dreams. But somehow we found each other, and we became friends. And that, you will see, made all the difference for us both" (page 6). The point is that compassion and fate may be invisible, but they are real and can change the future for the better by forming new friendships and/or families, which is something that Laura and Maurice's friendship could be described with.

In the Invisible Thread by Laura Schroff the word Invisible is hinted throughout the book and is important to understand the book. In the Invisible Thread the thread symbolizes a lot of different things about Laura and Maurice. For example, their lives are very different so that makes the thread invisible but in some ways they grew up the same way and have similar problems so that is why they have a “thread” that connects them. In our society we might pass people every day on the streets that share similar traits and problems with. Having an Invisible Thread means that some strangers you might have never talk to could be the perfect person for you to talk to and share your life with. In the book Laura and Maurice are invisible to others because they judge them right away. Some people don’t judge you for who you really are but how you portray yourself. I feel like both Maurice and Laura are misunderstood in the book.

When someone is invisible, that means they are unable to be seen and or heard. Throughout Maurice’s life, he has been invisible to those around him, specifically his family. He is allowed to go out whenever, and is never expected to be home at at a certain time because no one pays attention to him. Even Laura didn’t notice him when she was walking past him on the street. However, Laura has forgotten the fact she was too once invisible. Growing up she was somewhere in the middle of her family, and wasn’t the ideal child so her father did not pay a lot of mind to her. I believe this is why she felt an invisible pull to Maurice. Inherently, she knew that they both had their fair shares of troubles with their fathers and she wanted to go back and talk to him. Our society often overlooks people who aren’t wealthy or have status.

What does it mean to be invisible? Well i think that has multiple meaning one could be where people just looking through you as if you don’t matter and you don't exist and maybe you really don’t to them doesn't make them a bad person. In what ways are both Laura and Maurice invisible to others? Well Maurice was a black homeless boy so of course no one really cared at that moment he had basically nothing to give so there is that and with Laura I’m not too sure maybe because she is a older women and not everybody pay attention to them it definitely shows that if you are not rich or young and of the right color that you don't really matter and that could make you invisible to most which is not a good thing or it means that we need to start paying more attention to people
