The BackBeat Cardiac Neuromodulation Therapy (CNT) is a pacemaker-like implantable device that lowers blood pressure. It provides electrical signals to lower blood pressure by lowering ventricular filling and the pre-load on the heart. It also accounts for the autonomic nervous system response to the lowering of blood pressure to ensure blood pressure does not rise by using variable intervals of electric current.

BackBeat CNT has great potential. The ability to offer management of hypertension through a device greatly reduces concerns about oral medication adherence, and it has shown to be effective in initial trials.

This device seems like a great option for those with chronic hypertension, or for those who already need a pacemaker placed. For patients with existing hypertension, the risks and benefits of this procedure compared with taking oral antihypertensives and lifestyle changes will need to be considered thoroughly. For patients who may already need a pacemaker placed, this device seems an easy alternative to oral antihypertensives.

Although there is limited evidence that this device is effective, it has shown great benefit with sustained blood pressure reduction up to two years after placement (Burkhoff, 2018). Hopefully, this data will continue to be published and offer a better understanding of the lifespan of the BackBeat CNT.

Recommendation for patients should be limited at this point to those with severe, chronic hypertension who have attempted management in standard medical methodologies, and require a pacemaker placed. As further evidence regarding BackBeat CNT surfaces, this recommendation may broaden to include hypertension patients who simply do not wish to take oral hypertensives.

Team Leader Strengths: Strategic, Input, Learner, Connectedness, Woo
David (Deliberative - Executing) - David excels in being a strong decision maker. He is adept at identifying risk. This is beneficial when considering adopting the BackBeat CNT and considering the risks associated with a new product. David will function as the team member who considers obstacles and helps prepare the team for addressing them.
Carter (Communication - Influencing) - Carter is a great communicator and will facilitate the team discussing the BackBeat CNT with key hospital stakeholders. He will also excel in presenting the information our team discovers upon further investigation to the institution.
Pablo (Positivity - Relationship Building) - Pablo brings great enthusiasm to all his work. He will help set the tone with which the team works, and will also garner buy-in that the team's investigation is a priority from key stakeholders within the institution.
Rachel (Restorative - Executing) - Rachel is a fantastic problem solver. She is able to jump into a situation and quickly resolve any concerns. This is integral to our team, as we consider what pros and cons the BackBeat CNT will have within our institution, and troubleshoot how to address each concern.
Angelica (Analytical - Strategic Thinking) - Angelica brings logical thinking and the ability to work with data. She will work well with David to consider the concerns behind different risks to assess their validity and level of importance. She may also help gather and report out data that is required with potential research studies or outcomes assessments.

Based on StrengthsFinders
