Definitely imperfection and enthusiasm! I am such a nerd about Art and I am not afraid to get excited and express my love and appreciation for the world of creativity. With that love, comes the excitement to explore. I am constantly trying new things that sometimes work and other times don't. I am not afraid to have a lesson bomb, or have every final product a mess. Art is more about the journey than the destination anyway!

Enthusiasm! I am very passionate about health and fitness and I feel that it shows in many ways in my classroom when we are having discussions and I can give them examples of what I do on a daily basis and in P.E. when I get to be active with the kids.

Eagerness and open minded! I am so excited each day to have my students come to class and show them what I have prepared for them. I always let them know that I would never ask anything of them that I am not willing to try doing myself first! The best part of each lesson I teach is that I usually end up being the student in some way too. My kiddos teach me everyday by showing me how they view the world or a new piece of technology. I am so thankful for those experiences we share together.

I lead with a lot of the ones mentioned, but mostly with Humor and Enthusiasm. I am also never afraid to let the students see me make mistakes. I tell the students I learn from them and I have to change my lessons at times. I often talk about my family and friends and share pics. I even have one class that will ask me to tell them stories from my past if we have time left over.

Humor and imperfection! I let the kids see that I make mistakes too. I let the kids help come up with the examples for their notes and in the process, I might make mistakes. I let the kids find the mistakes, or if I miss something, acknowledge that I goofed, fix the issue and move on. Humor is always important! Even now in February, when the kids ask where to turn in their paper (even though it's been the same place since Sept) I will often say "Glue it to your forehead!" They usually smile, realize that I'm kidding, and turn in their paper.

Humor, Humility, Enthusiasm, and Imperfection.
I am far from perfect. And while my students will never see the flaws that might motivate them to take a less ideal path than we would all hope they would travel, my students do know that I do make mistakes, and when I do... well, there is no better remedy than to laugh. Getting students to laugh with you, at you, because of you, it disarms them. It allows them to see that it is okay to have flaws and that it is also okay to own them... share them... and laugh at them.
But, to do so, each student needs to see that what you have in store for them is the very greatest thing... Because, as we all know so well, the path that lies ahead for all of them is so unclear and out of focus. So, my goal is to show them that whatever it is, whatever their path is, it is not supposed to be approached with cautious trepidation, but to be embraced and attacked like kids running down the stairs on a Christmas Morning. Because, while we don't know what is in each box that lies ahead of us, these kids must also know that we are so excited to know what is in store for them and that we are there for them, no matter what their future may hold.
