They are all so excited about the future yet, they are so nervous about where they will end up and how on earth they are going to get there. They need individual praise and encouragement. They seek that personal connection even when they seem like they are 'fighting' it. Just like everyone at all ages- they want to be loved for who they are and where they are in life.

One of the biggest changes I have noticed from Elementary to Middle is their constant concern about their friends and being acknowledged in front of their peers. Elementary kids LOVED any recognition in front of their classmates, but I have learned quickly that middle schoolers do not, and would rather you talk to them privately.

They have no idea how smart they are. It's easy to see middle schoolers as "lazy" for not taking things to the highest level, but I feel like they often don't even don't know/realize that they have so much more in the mental tank then they are putting forth. Most kids (even advanced students) have to be guided and encouraged and told that they are brilliant in order to take the risk of trying something that dives below the surface and into the profound.

Even when they make bad choices, act out, or feel like they know everything. In the end, they need to know they are supported through all of the best and worst days of adolescence.

I think it was the best of times, it was the worst of times fits pretty well. These kids love life, they really enjoy it. However, they are going through so many changes that they really don't understand. I love having a real one-on-one conversation with them. They want someone to express their feelings to that they know will listen. Kids these days have it pretty rough from a technological standpoint. They have so many influences being thrown at them so many different ways and through so many different mediums that it is super easy for them to lose who they are and try to become who they see portrayed be it good or bad.

Middle school kids are not big elementary kids and they are not little high schoolers. They are perfectly in the middle. One day they seem thirty and the next day they act like they are three. That's what makes middle school so much fun -- allowing them to be their best self based on which self shows up that day!! Kind of like a box of chocolates-- we never know what we are going to get!!

They are so open to the world-- a recent lesson on equality brought up such mature feelings and thoughts that many "grown-ups" can't often wrap their minds around. They looked at me with a mutual expression of "duh", as though our differences were inconsequential, in the most considerate, way possible. Their willingness to be so inclusive of other races, religions, sexuality/gender, and much more always impresses me. This of course, is typically bookended by a return to the mind of a 12 year-old who ostracizes someone for having a funny hair cut, but in their moments of greatness, boy are they astounding!
