Do I think Heroic is effective at educating an audience about issues associated with soldiers returning home from the Afghanistan War?

To be honest it is a mix between yes and no, because in some aspects of the book like Jammy unconsciously lashing out at Sonny is I believe realistic because I’ve had it happen to me before. But of course being in a family that is largely military related I know what its like to have family members who were soldiers coming home, and it isn’t particularly shown as it is in the book through Jammy. Of course no one in my family actually served in Afghanistan which is completely different in all aspects from the violence, damage and mental damage that would come from a different war as all wars are different. The Afghanistan war began Sunday, 7th of October because of the 9/11 attacks that the United States believed were conducted by a man named Osama Bin Laden. Because of these attacks the USA began bombing Afghanistan targeting al-Qaeda on October 2001. This marked the beginning of the Afghanistan war which is still going on today.

Alcohol Abuse

When soldiers return into the Western way of living from the Afghanistan war is is documented that a horrible 20% of those soldiers resort to alcohol abuse. This could be for many reasons, of course you can talk about the horrific things that the soldiers have to experience which is unexplainable unless you have been to war. Alcohol is a depressant. It slows down your brain and this affects the way you think, feel and behave. This could easily be abused for one reason, alcohol helps you forget and numb yourself which from experience of my family members some soldiers need. In the book Heroic alcohol abuse is shown largely is one page where Jammy has come home from Afghanistan after losing his best mate Tommo, he decides to go drinking with his younger brother Sonny and some of his mates and is shown to be smashing down cans of drinks most likely to forget and to numb himself from the pain of war and the pain of losing his best mate. I feel like alcohol abuse is tackled very lightly in this book as it could have been shown more in detail and more throughout the novel.

PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

PTSD claims the lives of 11 percent of soldiers in Afghanistan, now if you look at other wars for example Vietnam which has 31 percent of soldiers diagnosed with PTSD it may not seem much. However there is not as many soldiers fighting in Afghanistan then there was in Vietnam. PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder) is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, rape or other violent personal assault. In Heroic at the end of the book Jammy is actually diagnosed with PTSD which you could have seen through out the book. For example after Jammy got back from Afghanistan he unconsciously lashes out at his younger brother Sonny which could be argued largely as PTSD with the way he thinks and the traumatic damage his brain has been through. I feel like PTSD is Heroic was tackled well through out the book bringing the symptoms up every now and then until the eventual diagnosis.

Family Dynamics

Family dynamics after a war like Afghanistan is of course going to be damaged, this could be brought back to my earlier points of alcohol abuse and PTSD. Constantly being drunk and violent would change the way that your family look or acts around you, I know personally that coming back from a war you really just want to be left alone. In Heroic Sonny is shown to be confused and constantly angry on why Jammy is acting the way he is not knowing the pain that he was going through. This is very realistic I find because people including myself really wouldn’t know what it is like fighting in a bloody war with things like IED’s and brothers constantly dying around you. Earle tackles this brilliantly.

How effective is Heroic in educating its target audience about the issues associated with soldiers returning home from the Afghanistan War? Personally I feel like Heroic is solid at education students or people who haven’t been to war about soldiers coming home from Afghanistan. From PTSD, alcohol abuse and family dynamic it is shown detailed and really gives people an insight on whats its like to deal with the pain and trauma that veterans go through on a daily basic because of Afghanistan.
