Greetings! I am Eireeka Garillos, and through the ages, I have become a fervent observer of the profusion of contemporary Philippine pop culture.

While pursuing Psychology as a student in college, the ingenuity and identity of the Filipino people reflected in various media has fascinated me beyond belief. The rich, cultural milieu of the Philippines to which I’ve endeared to my entire life, has molded not only these diverse expressions of art, but my deep interest to it as an individual as well. OPM (Original Pilipino Music), is some of the dearest music I listen to; in accompanying me for long-drives in both day and night, with their introspective lyricism and emotional, atmospheric tunes. Filipino indie films, are not only comfort watches but thought-provoking interests of mine as Philippine cinema explores diverse stories of social issues and thematic narratives, especially those recognized in MMFF. Social media trends. especially those that rise from Tiktok, following dance crazes like BINI's 'Pantropiko' and 'Tala' has become my own prominent obsession and self-entertainment. Iconic Filipino foods have gained much more recognition for over the years, being the cornerstone for Filipino culture, and has always been my favorites in celebrations--whether it is halo-halo, adobo, mango float, etc. And not to mention, variety shows, to which their diverse segments and live entertainment have become another steadfast interest of mine for my family and I to watch, such as 'It's Showtime' and 'ASAP Natin 'To'.

Some of my most all-time favorites are the pop-rock band Ang Bandang Shirley, the recent up-and-coming band Cup of Joe, the famous Eraserheads, and the popular artist Zild. In most recent, I have grown obsessed with filipino shoegaze, such as Ozzga and Polar Lows, with my most favorite being the Davao-based band to whose gigs I've watched numerous of times in bars and music fests, the Precal Dropouts.

I want to draw attention to OPM as a specific feature, with all of its capacity concocting poignant lyrics and intricate melodies that serves as a mirror to the societal dynamics in the Philippines. Having been exposed to it since I was young, OPM reflects not only musical prowess but generation-spanning diverse narratives; from traditional ballads, to modern pop and rock, it captures Filipino emotions and experience. The genre has delivered social criticism and storytelling, from teenage-angst of love and heartbreak, to political and systematical concerns. While OPM has always been a stapled testament of pop culture to the wider Filipino audience, it has only been recently wherein an upsurge of its fame within younger generations, and even international support has been noted. It articulates the blooming impact OPM has not only socially, but culturally and economically.
