<title>Definition of Student Self Assessment:Student self-assessment is “the process by which the student gathers information about and reflects on his or her own learning. &amp;nbsp; It is the student’s own assessment of personal progress in knowledge, skills, processes, or attitudes. Self-assessment leads a student to a greater awareness and understanding of himself or herself as a learner” (Ministry of Education, 2002, p. 3).</title>

<title>Why it should be used in the classroom: &amp;nbsp;Research has shown that using self-assessment with students can positively affect self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation levels in students (Rolheiser &amp;amp; Ross).Increased student engagementAccess to student information about student effort and persistance, otherwise unknown students begin to internalize instructional goals and apply them to future efforts </title>

<title>Demonstrate how it can be implemented:“I can” statements are a type of self-assessment. At the end of a unit in math, students can be asked to complete a certain number of “I can” statements that explain what they feel they are able to do. For example, after a number sense unit on addition, the students may be asked to write the following statements:I can efficiently add numbers without using my fingers.I can make 10 and add the rest.I can add doubles and near doubles mentally.“I can” statements can be used by the teacher as a type of ‘exit slip’ at the end of a lesson; before students can leave the classroom, they must complete their “I can” statements and give them to the teacher. This process allows the teacher to review the statements made by all of the students, and see if the “I can” statements correspond with the lesson objectives of the teacher, or if there is a need for review of the content. </title>

<title>Added value:&amp;nbsp;Increase the assessment value of a teacher created checklist or rating scale &amp;nbsp;by adding two or three additional steps that give students an opportunity to identify skills they would like to improve or the skill they feel is most important. For example:&amp;nbsp;put a star beside the skill you think is the most important for encouraging others and/or&amp;nbsp;circle the skill you would most like to improve and/or&amp;nbsp;underline the skill that is the most challenging for you.</title>
