At the end of a unit in math, students can be asked to complete a certain number of “I can” statements that explain what they feel they are able to do. For example, after a number sense unit on addition, the students may be asked to write the following statements:I can efficiently add numbers without using my fingers.I can make 10 and add the rest.I can add doubles and near doubles mentally.“I can” statements can be used by the teacher as a type of ‘exit slip’ at the end of a lesson; before students can leave the classroom, they must complete their “I can” statements and give them to the teacher.
