Students listen to a list of songs and try to answer a set of questions: Mood, country of origin, festivity/usage of music. This is used to engage students in choosing a celebration to inquire about. Students go further by finding more about the music used in a specific celebration. Is there any similarities in other song in instrumentation, mood etc.

Together with students we create a list of words that can help us describe a song or a piece. These could be grouped - e.g. "majestic, epic, exciting" "sad, melancholic" as a way of remembering what words we can use to describe a song

Dermot - Creating a vocabulary list is something I have taken from my time as an ESL teacher, I quite like to build up vocabulary lists and play Taboo with the students
