- SmartTAG System is a non-stop payment system to compliment the Touch 'n Go System - the smart card based electronic payment system for the Malaysian Toll Expressways is based on the infrared technology.

-  SmartTAG System consists of an On Board Unit (the SmartTAG), and lane equipment - IS Transceiver (an electronic device mounted above the lane to communicate with the SmartTAG) and IS Controller, which serves to link with the IS Transceiver and to the Lane Computer Systems (LCS).

-  Then the data will be reprogrammable to modify the data of amount charged on the travel distance, top-up for the credits and etc. to a receiver that open the gate allowing vehicles to pass through if the card is valid and with enough amount of credits with the help of the SmartTAG incorporated infrared communication that communicated with infrared transceivers mounted at the ceilings of toll plazas to allow vehicle drivers to drive through SmartTAG dedicated lanes and pay toll without stopping.
