In these two chapters, Doctor Thorne learns that his niece's other uncle, Roger Scatcherd, has made him the executor of his estate. Inside of his will he has stipulated that if something should happen to his son, his only heir, then the bulk of his estate, which includes $200K, will go to his sister's first born child, which just so happens to be Doctor Thorne's niece Mary. Doctor Thorne spends the bulk of the remaining chapters going back and forth debating on whether he should tell Roger about this development.

The way Trollope continues to add dimension to the story through multiple plot lines always impresses me, but this one in particular I was surprised by. I knew that Mary would need to inherit in some way so that she could be with her obvious future man, Frank Gresham the younger, but I truly did not know how it was going to happen. I am curious to know if Roger Scatcherd, her unknown uncle, will come to be known to her or if he will die before she or Doctor Thorne can make him aware of the situation.

Three men, Will, Gared, and Ser Waymar Royce are traveling through the forest. They explain how they are men of the Night's Watch and they are trying to find Castle Black. Will tells the other men that when he passes by it seemed that everyone was dead. The two other men disregard this and choose not to believe him but they continue to make their way to it. Upon arriving they find that the entire place is deserted; nobody is alive or dead. Gared and Royce mock Will and then decide to take a look around. The men split up and Will decides to climb a tree to get a better look. Will starts to hear a voice but he thinks it's just his mind playing tricks until a mysterious figure appears with a sword in its hand. Royce takes this as a threat and goes to fight the Other, as Will calls it. As Royce and the Other are fighting, more figures emerge from the forest. They all looked the same, snowy white skin, and bright blue eyes, and they spoke in a language Will couldn't understand. The Other killed Royce and Will contemplated what to do. He climbed down the tree to investigate the scene. He saw Royce's lifeless body and then he went to go look at his sword, broken to pieces. As Will turned around to get up, he was met with Royce standing over him with icy skin and blue eyes.

The story has already started out full of suspense and leaves me wanting to read more. The prologue gives insight onto what this book is going to be about and I am excited to read more of it. I was very surprised at the very end of the prologue when Ser Waymar Royce seems to have come back to life after being killed by the Other. I find it a little bit suspicious that Gared was no where to be found during the fight between Royce and the Other because you would have thought he would've heard all of the commotion.

Will seems to be a very superstitious and cautious person. He was afraid to go back to Castle Black and he was too afraid to say anything or help Royce when the Other had appeared. This internal struggle he has with whether or not he should speak out and help or not contributes to the story by giving it a sense of fright. This chapter may be foreshadowing an event to come later in the book and having this information is important for when that part comes.

In the chapter we learn of the youngest boy in the Stark family. Bran Stark has 5 siblings, the only named ones we know of so far are Robb Stark and Jon Snow. Bran's father had decided that Bran was finally old enough to become a man and that means watching his father execute a man. Jon explains to Bran that the man who is being executed is a man who came from outside of "the wall." They said he was a bad man who did horrendous things and deserved death. They also explained that this was his father's job to do because he was in the King's command. Upon returning back home to Winterfell, the men come across a dead direwolf and her live cubs. After finding that there were enough cubs for each of the Stark children, it was decided they would bring them home, also considering the Stark family emblem is a direwolf. Bran swears that all of the children will take care of their wolves and train them properly by themselves.

We know now all the names of the Stark children, Rickon, Arya, Sansa, Bran, Rob, and Jon. Catelyn Stark goes to look for Ned and we learn that she comes from the house of Tully and that she has a sister. She tells Ned that one of his closest friends, and her brother-in-law, had passed away and that the king, Robert Baratheon, sent notice that he was coming to the North to see Ned. With his arrival, Ned and Catelyn discuss who will be joining the king in his visit and they explain the queen and her family would be coming too. The queen, Cersei Lannister, has children as well but we have only learned the name of the youngest, Tommen. From Catelyn's point of view, we know that neither her nor Ned are big fans of the Lannisters, including the queens two brothers. At the end of the chapter, Ned and Catelyn discuss what festivities will be planned for the king's visit

In this chapter we are introduced to a 13 year old girl named Daenerys. Her and her brother, Viserys, are the last living of their family, House Targaryen, after their father had been killed on the throne. It is explained that dragon's blood has run through their veins for centuries. Viserys and his mother, Dany unborn, had to flee with their mother in order to keep their lives but unfortunately when their mother gave birth to Dany she passed away. Viserys is a very angry character who is power hungry and is willing to do whatever it takes to take back his family's land even if that means marrying off his little sister. Dany is meant to marry a man called Khal Drogo in order for them to use his army. Dany doesn't want to marry the khal but she is terrified of her brother and really has no other choice.

In this chapter we are more exposed to the point of view of Eddard Stark, also called Ned. The last time we were left with the Starks we found that the king, Robert Baratheon, was planning to make a visit to Winterfell. This chapter begins with the arrival of Robert and his family, also including the king's guard. Robert and Ned make their way down to the crypt of the Starks, where all of the past Starks are laid to rest with stone statues of them. The significant tombs that were named were Brandon Stark, Rickard Stark, and Lyanna Stark. Rickard Stark was Ned's father and Lyanna and Brandon were his sister and brother. Robert and Ned speak about how Robert and Lyanna were supposed to be wed, joining houses Stark and Baratheon together, but before they could Lyanna had passed at only 16 years old. Robert had been in love with Lyanna and he still grieves for her and even insults Ned for not laying her to rest above the tombs and in the sun but Ned argues that it was her request to be laid in the crypts of her family. Lyanna's death was also something that had impacted Ned in a huge way. Robert and Ned speak of Jon Arryn and his death and how his widow and son had left Casterly Rock and went back home to the Eeryie. Robert now needs a new Hand since Jon had been his before. He offers Ned to be the Hand of the King and at first Ned refuses because it is a very big job but Robert offers something Ned had not foreseen, for his 11 year old daughter, Sansa, to marry Robert's son in order to join the houses. Ned is taken by surprise and tells the king he needs some time to think but in the back of Ned's mind he knows one thing, winter is coming.

Because of the relationship between Robert and Ned, Ned knew that he would be asked to be the new Hand but he never suspected Robert to suggest for their children to marry. When Robert said that Sansa, being 11 years old, was at the age for betrothal. This is shocking because even though Sansa is so young, she is expected to be married off at her young age. I also find it annoying and disrespectful that they are speaking of who Sansa will marry and win without even discussing it with her.

Jon is not allowed to join his half-sisters and half-brothers at the dining table because he said that Lady Stark said it would be an insult to the royal family to dine with a bastard. He believes that King Robert is not suitable for a king and that Queen Cersei has too much evil and bad intentions behind her eyes. All of the Baratheon children are described as having blue or green eyes and blonde curly hair. When Jaime and Tyrion Lannister, the queen's twin and younger brother, enter the hall Jon describes that Jaime is the true image of what a king should be and says that he is called the Lion to his face but the "Kinglsayer" behind his back. Tyrion Lannister, the youngest of the Lannister children, is an Imp and he is generally looked down upon due to his condition which makes him half the height of an average man. His half-siblings walk in with the Baratheon children and Jon is lucky to be a bastard so he doesn't have to participate and he gets to have his direwolf, Ghost, by his side. Jon, only 14 years old, has been drinking wine through the entire feast and is nearly drunk. His uncle, Benjen Stark, comes over to speak to him. Benjen Stark is a man of the Night's Watch on the Wall. Jon begs Benjen to ask his father, Eddard, to let him come to the Wall with him and he tries to argue that despite his age, he is close enough to becoming a man to be able to fight on the Wall but Benjen argues that Jon can't make an oath without fully knowing what he will be missing. Jon drunkenly storms out of the hall with Ghost and runs into a lonely Tyrion Lannister. The two have a conversation about how they are both looked down upon in society because of who they are and Tyrion tells Jon that he should use being a bastard as a weapon and not a flaw.

I found it funny that in the middle of the dinning hall, during the feast, Jon just grabs an entire chicken off of the table and feeds it to Ghost. This also being the first time Jon has ever been sincerely drunk, his point of view is funnier because his dialogue is a lot more bold and definitely spoken before he thought about what he was saying.

Jon is not a trueblood son of the Starks and because of this we get his point of view as being a part of the Stark household but also isolated from his family. Not having a known mother, makes him stand out alone from the Starks and society looks down on him even though it is not his fault for being born the way he was. Tyrion's and Benjen's words to Jon had completely altered his thoughts in different ways and I think they will have a lot to do with his character from this point. Benjen basically told Jon that he wouldn't know what it means to be a man until he lays with a woman and he can't truly make an oath to something without ever getting to experience manly things. Tyrion tells Jon that even though he is a bastard, he doesn't have to let that be something that holds him back from being a greater man. Tyrion can't help being an Imp and because of that he is characterized in the same way bastards may be but he tells Jon that on the outside, he can be whoever he wants to and he doesn't have to subject himself to only being a bastard.

Catelyn Stark and Ned Stark discuss the offer given to Ned from King Robert and discuss whether or not Ned will be his Hand. During this discussion, they are interrupted my Maester Luwin who has a message for Catelyn. Catelyn finds it is from her sister and once deciphered, she explains that her sister believes her late husband, Jon Arryn, was murdered. With the arrival of this news, it is determined that Ned will go to the South with the king and be his Hand. The catch to this is that Ned will be taking some of the children with him including Sansa, Arya, and Bran. Rickon and Robb are meant to stay in Winterfell with Catelyn as Robb will someday be the lord of Winterfell, Bran beside him. The matter of where Jon Snow will go, north or south, is complicated because Ned views him as his true son while Catelyn consistently expresses her hatred towards Jon. The story of where Jon came from is a mystery and all that anyone knows is Ned was gone or a year during the war and in that time he had a son and brought the child back with him to Winterfell. No one knows who Jon's mother is but they have their suspicions. Maester Luwin expresses how Jon had practically begged Benjen to let him join the Night's Watch and because of this, Ned made the harsh decision that Jon would go to the Wall.

Arya, the youngest daughter of the Starks, is a fierce young girl with 0 passion for "womanly" hobbies. Arya, Sansa, and Sansa's friends were all partaking in needlework when Arya got offended because her needlework could not measure up to the other girls. Arya's jealousy of her sister, Sansa, is rooted from the fact that she thinks her sister is better than her. Beautiful, graceful, talented, and smart, Sansa is everything Arya isn't. Arya takes after her father and would rather join in the fighting her brothers get to do. Arya runs from the needlework with the other girls, too upset to stay, and ends up finding Jon, her other brothers, and the princes all training together. Arya brings along her wolf pup, Nymeria, and she makes a point to explain that Sansa named her wolf Lady. The Stark boys versus the Baratheon boys. Tommen and Rickon were squaring with each other as everyone else watched. Arya sits with Jon and speaks with him about how life truly isn't fair because she can't join in with the boys' activities. Jon also claims life isn't fair because as a bastard, he isn't allowed to go up against the royal children. Robb and Prince Joffery are next to battle when an argument breaks out about which kind of sword they are to use. The boys want to use real steel swords with sharp edges, but Ser Rodrick claims they are too young. A fight breaks out between the boys and the men and eventually the game is called off and they separate. Jon tells Arya that it would be in her best interest to go to her room or her punishment will be even worse if she continues to hide from her mother and the septa.

When Arya called Jon her "brother" rather than calling him her "half brother" or "the bastard of Ned Stark," I thought it was a meaningful and very different feeling towards Jon than what we have already learned. I found it a little surprising at first because no one else has expressed this type of feeling towards Jon. Compared to Catelyn's hate for Jon, Arya's feelings are the complete opposite. Arya's rebellious nature could be related to her feelings toward Jon but I still find it warming that despite what everyone else says about Ned's bastard son, she still has love for him. Arya feels that she relates to Jon more because they are the only two who look like their father, while the other Stark children take after their mother. Arya explains how she had once thought she was a bastard herself but Jon reassured her that she was not. She, so far, has been one of the only characters to have respect and love for Jon.

Arya is a very rebellious character who disagrees with the concept that there is a split in the hobbies/jobs meant for men and women. Arya's perspective is very childlike and exaggerated and I think this will play a huge part later on in the book. I hope she keeps her spirit and continues to stay determined. I also believe that Arya's jealousy towards Sansa is going to cause a rift in the story. As they are the only daughters of Ned Stark, the divide between the two is going to cause issues. Arya's jealousy is not fed by hate for Sansa because although she is jealous of her sister, her tone doesn't exactly portray hate. The rebel in Arya is driven and determined and although I think her nature means well, it is going to be a problem in the future.
