Strengths and weaknesses of technological analysis in golf

Strengths of technological analysis is that it can help to provide detailed and in-depth data on swing mechanics such as club head speed and spin rate. Additionally, use of technology in analysis can help with swing training and development due to the visual feedback given to the golfer and this means that golfers are able to train certain areas of their game.

However, in contrast to the above strengths of using technology for golfer analysis, there are weaknesses which can counter the strengths. For example, there is a possible weakness which is that people might misinterpret the technology and the data produced which could potentially lead to inaccurate feedback and therefore changes in the golfer’s swing which might negatively affect their performance. Additionally, the large amount of data produced could overload the golfer as they might not understand where they should focus their attention in training.

Trackman - Is a launch monitor tracks the golf club and ball you hit the golf ball the trackman measures the clubhead speed during the swing and tracks the golf ball from when you hit the ball to its finishing point to give you distance and ball speed as well.

When calculating the club head speed the trackman measures how fast the club is moving at impact.

Attack angle - It also measures the angle you strike the ball at for example if you strike down on the ball it will give you a negative number however if you strike up on the ball it will give you a positive number.

It also gives you the face angle and club path during the swing:

Face angle- Trackman tells you if your clubface was open or closed at impact when hitting the ball.

Club path - In terms of club path it will tell you the direction your club is moving during the swing and when hitting the ball for example in to out or out to in.

Technical analysis is a means of examining and predicting price movements in the financial markets, by using historical price charts and market statistics. It is based on the idea that if a trader can identify previous market patterns, they can form a fairly accurate prediction of future price trajectories.

It is one of the two major schools of market analysis, the other being fundamental analysis. Whereas fundamental analysis focuses on an asset’s ‘true value’, with the meaning of external factors and intrinsic value both considered, technical analysis is based purely on the price charts of an asset. It is solely the identification of patterns on a chart that is used to predict future movements.
