It is important to use netiquette because online communication is non-verbal. Most of this online communication consists of reading something someone else has typed. Because the internet lacks body language and/or facial expressions, the feeling of a statement can often be misconstrued and misinterpreted. By following the rules of netiquette, online communication becomes clearer and evident.
https://www.auburn.edu/citizenship/netiquette.html

With the increased use of the Internet in modern times, online etiquette known as netiquette, is very important to your success not only in school but in your career and throughout your life as a whole. You always want to come across as professional and mature when communicating online. Some tips are as follows:

- Always make sure emails or blogs are clear in their objective -- do not allow room for miscommunication or misinterpretation. This may cause confusion or unnecessary drama.
- Never use sarcasm or humor that can be taken in an offensive or harmful way. Because online communication is non-verbal, others may take your statements the wrong way even if it was not intentional.
- Avoid the use of CAPS! This may seem like you are screaming, yelling, or raising your voice to someone online.

These tips will help you in school, and for future employers to know you are mature and can handle the professional world ahead of you!
https://u.osu.edu/west.676/2014/07/06/hello-world/

As today's students grow older, they will be using the Internet to apply to colleges and jobs, and to communicate and network with colleagues. Since your email and discussions are on the Internet, you should always practice proper netiquette, or good manners. Use proper punctuation, refrain from using IM-speak (instant-messaging language) or slang, and keep in mind that people do not know what tone of voice you are using in an email or a discussion. Finally, always remember to sign your first and last name -- there may be another student with the same first name as you!

Social media is probably one of the biggest and most important areas of Netiquette. Social media lacks emotional connection, gives people a way to be hurtful while hiding, decreases face-to-face communication skills, and conveys an inauthentic expression of feeling. I chose this specific netiquette because I feel there are many cons, but also pros to social media. It has become a worldwide disaster, yet at the same time a blessing. I personally feel that it is important to realize the effects social media can have on yourself and others. Social media can portray yourself in different ways.
Although there are many positives to social media, I would like to teach students many ways social media may not always have netiquette. "Privacy" settings are actually not always private. Be cautious of what you post on any account. This may include, but not limited to, inappropriate topics, profanity, and pictures. Do not engage in any argument between strangers, acquaintances, and/or friends. These arguments are not worth it and may even cause more trouble than you thought. Be mindful that any content posted on social media can go viral in the matter of seconds. Respect the privacy of yourself and others. Overall, the disadvantages of social networking goes far deeper than privacy and safety -- it also interrupts the foundation of human development.

http://libraryguides.brownmackie.edu/content.php?pid=648539&sid=5369843

What makes online communication so difficult, is the absence of emotions such as, body language, tone, or facial expressions. The following netiquette rules show the dangers of online communication and show how using good netiquette can help you. You should always research before asking. When asking a question online, you should research itfirst. There is a possibility that someone had the exact same question and received an answer somewhere online. You should also spell check and proof reading everything you post. We all misspell words or make typos, but that’s what spell checkers are for. Proof reading helps you notice missing words, bad grammar, and typos that change the meaning of a word that are not caught by spell checkers. When writing online, it is important to use emoticons in certain situations. It can be hard to show emotions in writing. This is why you should use emoticons to specify if you are feeling disappointed :( or you are joking ;). This helps us to avoid misunderstandings.
I chose this netiquette because i think it is important that everyone remembers that on the other side of the computer there is another human being too. You should treat them with respect and the way you would want to be treated. Make sure you actually want to click “send”. I want to to emphasize to my students that everything they do online is on record and can come back to haunt you in the future. You should also never SHOUT! Typing in CAPITALS or UPPER CASE letters is the same thing as yelling or shouting. I personally dont like when people write in capitals to me, I feel as if I did something wrong or that are mad at me. This can come off as very rude. You should turn off the CAPS LOCK when communicating online.
http://libraryguides.brownmackie.edu/content.php?pid=648539&sid=5369843
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/7-netiquette-guidelines-writing-emails-forum-posts/

It is important to acknowledge that an online classroom is still a classroom. Certain behaviors are expected when you communicate with both your classmates and your instructors. You should always treat your instructor with respect when you are communicating. When sending an email, always use your professors’ proper title: Dr. or Prof., Mr., Mrs., or Ms, unless they tell you differently. Manners are always expected. Saying "please” and “thank you” when asking for help is respectful and should be a constant manner.
Always use clear and concise language when writing in the classroom, on an email, and much more. Remember that all college level communication should have correct spelling and grammar. I chose thins netiquette because i think it is vital for students to not use slang terms such as “wassup?” and texting abbreviations such as “u” instead of “you”. I think its extremely disrespectful when students talk to instructors in texting langauge. Responses to an email or discussion should always be in universal font and size, which is Times New Roman and size 12 font. Students should always be careful when using humor or sarcasm because it could be misunderstood in an email or discussion post. This can cause your message to be taken too seriously or offensive. I also want to stress to my students that it is important to be careful with all personal information online. Overall, when you are in an online classroom, you should always be respectful to other students and you instructor and always make sure your work looks professional.

http://teach.ufl.edu/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/NetiquetteGuideforOnlineCourses.pdf

When communicating online, there are certain rules that should be followed. One major rule we as children and adults have been told is that you should, "Do to others as you would want others to do to you." That should be followed on the computer as well as off the computer. You should be treating others with respect and care. Being online lacks a face-to-face communication. This means that you are unable to see someone's facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice to communicate your meaning. It is very simple to misinterpret someone's words.
I have chosen this Netiquette as a rule because I feel that all should be respectful. Todays society has changed so greatly from the past, and the inclusion of technology does not help. We live in a world that many times focuses on the negative and the pessimistic. One of my favorite sayings my mom has taught me since I was a young girl was, "Choose to be kind in an unkind world." There are so many things that may bring you down and people that may hurt you, but focusing on the positive outlook of scenarios will always help. There is an abundance of good in this world that we need to open our eyes to see it right in front of our faces. The world may be cruel, but try to lead with kindness and strength. You are the only one who can change this!
This is extremely important to teach to students. People have become so cruel to others, in ways of making fun on and off the internet. People have been harassed, cyberbullied, and teased way too often nowadays. This netiquette expresses to treat others how you want to be treated. All students and adults need to learn to be aware of other people's feelings. Be kind to yourself and be kind to others. You get what you give - choose to be kind in an unkind world.

http://www.albion.com/netiquette/rule1.html

I believe that teaching students online classroom netiquette is extremely important. All students should know how to communicate with their classmates and instructors online. I will teach this to them by having each of my students write an email to their "instructor". Once they conduct this email they will give it to a partner to read over. Their partner will read the email and mark any wrong doings and praise their friends for their correct doings. I will also write two discussion posts. One will have bad grammar and a sarcastic tone. The other post will have no grammar issues and be in a serious tone. In pairs, students will read both posts and decide which one of the two would be the best to post in an online classroom. This will show students the difference between the posts, while choosing which is the proper one that should be used.

It is crucial to teach all students about respect, especially on the internet. Although some may think it is "cool" or "funny", bullying and harassing another student is not respectful and should not be allowed in your classroom. Because students are behind the computer, most of the bullying that happens occurs behind the screen. IT IS WRONG! Cyberbullying has become huge and has created sever problems. I will hold a lesson for my students which expresses the thoughts behind cyberbullying and the consequences of cyberbullying. This lesson will be not be used as an acting lesson because I would not want my students to "pretend" talking nasty to others. I feel that this pretend talking will teach them mean words to say to others. I will simply make a PowerPoint that explains what it is, what it does, and why it harms others. It should be expressed sternly, but also in a way that will keep their attention not bore them. I will attach videos that show students feelings when this has happened to them, as well as students that have done the wrong to others. This is a serious topic that needs to be talked about in a serious and thorough matter!
