A foundation of lies leads to controversy. Congress woman Alexandria recently made a statement about America. “Until America tells the truth about itself, were not going to heal”. I agree with her statement because thin that are based upon lies cause controversy and false hope. Donald Trump for example his whole campaign was a lie. He promised to “make America great again”. All he did was make matters worse. One of the biggest lies that President Trump has told throughout the government shutdown battle. It’s a lie that Trump has been telling since 2015 is that the big, beautiful wall he envisions on our southern border is synonymous with “border security.” No lie is more foundational to Trumpism than this one is.

Also, I feel like most people my age aren’t aware of what’s going on, so they don’t even bother to vote. The school system doesn’t teach you what you need to know they only teach you what they want you to know. If more people were aware of the truth, then Donald Trump wouldn’t be president. Education is and always will be an important need in our society. Of course, we need an education but is schooling necessary. There are so many socioeconomic issues in this broken education system that we call American Education. The issues in our education system is the division between social classes.

Social classes just follow a certain curriculum without challenging students to learn other material. For example in a middle class students work for them is getting the correct answer. Answers are usually found in books or by listening to the teacher. Remembering a bunch of irrelevant information shouldn’t determine one’s intelligence. Secondly, I think all social classes should be offered the same opportunities as affluent schools. Children that attend affluent schools learn better in an environment where they can think freely and have the resources they need to be successful. Lastly, to fix this we should encourage them to take on serious material in history, literature, philosophy, music, art, politics, and everything teachers try to avoid.

The best part in all of this is that now we understand how the education system works we know how to make things better. Well “schooled” kids spend most of their spare time watching tv, texting, getting online. Well educated kids use some of their spare time challenging themselves, learning new things they don’t teach you in school. It is our own job to take our education in our own hands. It is own fault if we are bored. We can’t change the way things are, but we can educate and challenge ourselves.

Immigrants want some of the same opportunities. In America our freedom gives us the opportunity to succeed on our own terms. Freedom is what thrives and motivates us to achieve the American Dream. Some people get upset about immigrants coming to America, but I don’t see a problem with it if they don’t bring any baggage with them. If they aren’t criminals and don’t cause anyone any harm I don’t see the problem with them being here. Instead of focusing on immigrants I think people should focus on the criminals and the issues that are already in America.

What does the American Dream mean to you? To your family? Your community?

The American Dream is a way of life and is a way of life and is subjective because everyone has different goals in life. To some people the American Dream can be simple, having a job, house, family and to be financially stable. To others some might think the American Dream is to have fame or a luxurious lifestyle. The American depends on the person and their goals. That is the reason till this day nobody has prevailing with regards to finding a general definition that is connected to the American Dream.

The American Dream has changed drastically over time. Typically, an American family from the fifties might have wanted to own a television because it was the newest technology. Now families want a big plasma tv for every room in their household or maybe expensive things. But as historians go back, they try to conclude that the ideas of behind the American Dream came from the time when the Declaration of Independence was introduced. From even further in time, Americans just wanted their own independence and freewill before the Declaration of Independence was signed. “The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion it’s possible to achieve the American Dream”- (Tommy Hilfiger). This quote explains that success isn’t always easy to accomplish, but if you work hard enough you can accomplish your goals to be successful. However, today things have changed, and the workforce is very competitive, so it is harder than it was before the American Dream is not accessible as it should be because of the requirements to get a stable carrier is higher and the struggle to keep it going is even more difficult.

To be free, you must be responsible. Free people are not subservient, but neither are they uncontrolled. When you’re a kid being adult seems cool because you have so much freedom to do whatever you want, but with freedom comes a lot of responsibility. You have control over your life but do you really? College students for example, when we graduate high school they tell us that were “grown” and that were adults but really, we're just grownish. Were legally considered adults but we really don’t know what we're doing. Most students are dependent and still rely on their parents financially and emotionally for the support. Growing up has its challenges, living on your own without your parents for the first time is different. When you’re a kid everyone makes your decisions for you so how would you really know what being free means. You can’t be free if you can’t take care of yourself. To take care of yourself you must be responsible. When you rely others too much take care of you you'll never have a sense of Independence. It feels good to be able to get what you want without asking anyone. The first sense of freedom I had is when I had was when I got my first job. I didn’t make a lot of money of course but I could afford to get myself things without bothering my parents all the time. Having control over your life is an act of both freedom and responsibility. You can’t have one without the other.

Also, being free in America is an illusion. In my opinion no one is completely free. You have freedom but you’re not actually free to do and or say whatever you want without some type of backlash. You can be free, but you still must deal with the judgment of others. If one is confident in their self, then other people’s opinions shouldn't matter but some judgment is impossible to ignore. A big part of being free is being honest about who you are. Most people might say that your sexuality doesn’t have anything to do with who you are as a person and it shouldn’t, but it does. People are very judgmental so if you’re not comfortable about who you are as a person then you'll never be free. In the book “When they Call You a Terrorist” the author Khan Cullors shows us her path of freedom. On her journey of becoming free she talks about being a transgender woman and coming to the terms of acceptance and love for herself. In the beginning of the story she talked about dating a man that didn’t know she was a transgender woman. Eventually she told him the truth about herself, but she was scared because not all people are welcoming to the LGBTQ community. The world we live in is very scary and judgmental. Some people still have so much hate towards people that are a part of LGBTQ and all they want is to be free. Being free also means to be fearless. Even though she was afraid to be free because of the bad judgment she might have gotten from others she couldn’t let that stop her because she wanted to be happy.

The world needs Superheroes because it's an escape from reality and it gives people hope. Which is why they are so popular. “Were constantly bombarded with negativity in the media”. Super heroes may be flawed, but they’re still positive people. There so many horrible people in the world there are hardly any good role models. Politicians for example. “We’re getting more and more jaded by politicians, people in power, and businesses. We want to have an ideal that we can actually look up to”(Burke) Also not only the world needs superheroes, but we need more black superheroes as well. Though black superheroes aren't exactly new there aren’t many of them , Disney Channel's 2000 movie, Up, Up & Away and Marvel's upcoming Black Panther and Black Lighting tv series on CW were the only black superheroes on television and only two out of three were successful. Black men aren’t always seen in a positive light in society. There should be more black men as positive role models for black boys to look at. Black boys don’t really have that many positive role models or superheroes that look like them. Which is why I feel like it important for them to be represented on t.v in a positive way. Society already has so many negative stereotypes towards black men they need see people like see someone like them to give them hope and optimism as well. I don’t believe that people don't have supernatural abilities in real life, but I do like super heroes because they give kids hope. Even some adults enjoy superheroes because they remind them of their childhood. Superheroes also set a good example for kids because superheroes always try to help others, so it shows them how you should do the right thing to help others. From what I've seen on t.v superheroes are meant to protect people in society from crime and natural disasters. In real life superheroes give children a sense of hope that they can do anything, and they look up to them.
