Ils expliquent que le racisme a débuté avec la fin de l’esclavage à la guerre de Sécession. Ils étaient égaux aux blancs selon la loi. Mais à la suite d’une grande pression sur le gouvernement, la loi décréta que les Afro-américain étaient égaux mais séparé. Les lieux public était séparés comme les toilettes et les transports public. Les Afro-Américains étaient considérés comme des citoyens de seconde classe. En 1909 un groupe de personnes créer une association national pour résoudre les problèmes et parvenir à la fin de la loi Jim Crows. Mais quelques année plus tard, un groupe raciste est créer, le KKK, et vont augmenter les tensions raciales. Pendant la première guerre mondiale, les membres de l’association de 1909 vont être lynché. En réponse, le Civil Right Movement va être mis en place pacifiquement en faisant des actions comme du boycott. En 1957, un groupe de jeune Afro-Américain est admis dans une école « blanche » mais le gouverneur est contre. Dans les années soixante, un nouveau groupe voit le jour le « Southern Freedom Movement » qui sera soutenu par le président Kennedy. En 1963, ce dernier propose un projet de loi sur les droits civiques au congrès mais il mourra avant. Son successeur, le président Johnson fera aboutir le projet. Les « noirs » auront alors le droit de vote et pourront aller dans tous les lieux publics. Une vague de violence se déchaina alors contre les Afro-Américains. Le groupe « Black Panthers Party » sera créer pour lutter contre l’idéologie du KKK à la suite de Malcom X. Les grandes figures de la lutte contre la discrimination raciale, seront assassinés. C’est le cas de Malcom X, de Martin Luther King ou encore du président Kennedy. Le racisme va continuer jusque dans les années 90.
