My favorite activity for reading comprehension is the Think Aloud.

In this activity, the teacher asks higher level questioning to model how she thinks about what she is reading.

For example: some questions she says aloud might be:
"I wonder how the character will respond.....
I wonder what is going to happen..."
"What does this passage tell me about the character..."

My favorite activity for fluency building is the teacher-student Read Aloud.
In this activity the teacher models fluency by reading a page from the selection, and then the student reads a short passage or page. They continue taking turns until the selection for that time is finished.

The teacher gives appropriate feedback to the student regarding fluency skills.

Teacher designs a place in the room where students can easily see words written on cards for use in discussions, spelling, and writing activities. |

Have the words wall divided into sections for each letter of the alphabet. Choose words used in Shared Reading or spelling lists that are high frequency words. Introduce 3-4 words a week.

After introducing the words, review the words of that section on word wall will the new word will go.

Have the children clap the syllables. Have the children say the word, spell the letters, and then repeat the word (whole group).

Later in the week, have the student identify the words by playing Word Slap with a flyswatter. The teacher reviews words on the word wall randomly by calling out the word and a student is given the flyswatter to "slap" the word.

These words then become part of their repertoire and they are responsible to spell them correctly in writing assignments.

This is a great word activity that allows the student to see the relationship between the initial sound of a word and the rest of the word.

Using alphabet word cards, the teacher forms a word that is developmentally appropriate for the student. The teacher then brainstorms with the teacher or another child to think of words that are the same in structure, except for the beginning sound. The student (s) can experiment with the word cards by using them to replace the beginning sound and record the new words that are formed.

This is my favorite activity to do with students.
The teacher and student collaborate to select a writing sample from a previous prompt. Using that prompt, the teacher provides a graphic organizer to help the student organize details that he can add to his writing sample.

Have the student add details to the story and continue to work with the student to demonstrate how he/she can use a few ideas or sentences to develop a quality writing piece.
