Students with no or incomplete knowledge of alphabet.
This small group listen to alphabet letter names on a given website using an i-pad and headphones. By the constructivist model they experience the sound of the letter names as they touch the letters at their own pace - again and again if necessary. They do this several times and are encouraged to say the letter names to each other in the small group.
They have pattern worksheets showing the pen strokes needed to form the upper and lower case letters and draw lines on blank paper to copy these onto a line. Having written a full upper and lower case set they again say the letter names to themselves with. They then say the letter names to each other and are encouraged by the teacher to ask each other letter names out of sequence.
This links to a number of elements of Cognitive theory - knowledge, application and evaluation.
There are links to socially situated learning in their collaboration together and in a growing understanding from the culture of the class that the alphabet is important, needed to function for any reading and writing and satisfying to get right.

In the first few weeks of the course students do a lot on communicating basic personal information.
The teacher sets up individual laptops with headphones and students listen to authentic street interview clips in London when people give similar personal details to those they have been learning in the class. Those who can make notes from the transcript they can follow as they listen. Because the language is authentic but measured learners begin to identify that what is learned in class has real life application outside.
Students have control over how many times they play the clips and their pace.
This links with constructivist theory in that real world examples are with time given to reflect, ask questions, discuss with learners nearby and build on previous knowledge.
