She has started to lose motivation as she now believes there is now way out. Ruth also competes with Mama in who runs the household.

She wants a yard for her son to play in, which is significantly better than watching him and a bunch of other kids play with rats in an alley. Ruth doesn't have the money she needs to accomplish her dream, and barely has the money to live. She lives in a very small apartment that can barely fit the people already living in it, so when she finds out that another child of hers is on the way, she puts a down payment on an abortion, which is illegal at the time this story is set in. Travis- They have a very loving relationship. Ruth plays the role of a disciplinary mother , she always seems like she's the bad guy but she is just trying to do whats best for the family.

Mama- Competitive relationship because they both want to be the head of the household. They also have a loving relationship which we see when Mama is comforting Ruth about the pregnancy.
