  • Cholecystitis: Infection of the gallbladder, often due to a gallstone in the gallbladder. Cholecystitis causes severe pain and fever, and can require surgery when infection continues or recurs.
  • Gallbladder cancer: Although rare, cancer can affect the gallbladder. It is difficult to diagnose and usually found at late stages when symptoms appear. Symptoms may resemble those of gallstones.
  • Gallstone pancreatitis: An impacted gallstone blocks the ducts that drain the pancreas. Inflammation of the pancreas results, a serious condition.

  • Research was done on the investigation of gallbladder cancer. They examined if circulating levels of inflammatory proteins is associated with all-cause mortality among patients with this cancer. They found that of 49 proteins, 8 of them were significantly associated with overall with overall survival.
  • In further research, they have also found that a vegetarian diet is a risk factor for symptomatic gallstone disease. They found this by studying vegetarians vs. non-vegetarians and found that that vegetarians had a much more increased risk than the other. 
  • Researchers dug deeper into the theory that marital status has an influence on the survival of gallbladder cancer patients. Married patients had a 5 year longer survival than those who were not married.
