In this video, a young woman named Chika Okoro speaks about the subtle racism in the casting call for the movie Straight Outta Compton. The casting call for a woman in the film is categorized as A to D. The A girls are "the hottest of the hottest" the description for these women is they must have real hair (no extensions). The next category is the B-girls, "fine girls, long natural hair," and must be lightskin. Beyonce is the go-to example that these women must resemble. The C-girls are African American girls who can have extensions but have brown skin or a very light brown. The D girls- are AA who look bummy, "not in good shape," poor, and must be dark skin.

This is an example of whitewashing. This is Lupita, who is known primarily for being a dark skin African woman. In these two photos, you can see how they've lightened her skin tone drastically from her true tone. This happens with many celebrities; many companies try to force unrealistic beauty standards on ethnic and melanated women.

Media Beauty Campaign

Between this Victoria Secret Perfect Body Campaign showing skinny and light women and Dove’s Real Beauty Campaign showing more natural and diverse body types the progression towards inclusivity can be seen. The media and the surrounding culture has previously created an implicit bias towards skinny, white women over natural women; with media campaigns such as the one run by Dove, there is hope and proof that this can change in the future and individuals implicit bias towards a certain type of women will diminish as the culture surrounding beauty standards also shifts. The media is a powerful resource and advertisements have the power to change the culture surrounding what a woman needs to look like to be considered beautiful.

Racism in how the West perceives Eastern beauty

The West has its unique sense of beauty towards East Asian females that some Asians from East Asia might find racist and troublesome. Bebecca Davis (2020) states that the movie The Farewell, which featured an all-Asian cast and told a story about a Chinese immigrant kid growing up in the U.S., did not gain success in mainland China because that Chinese audience thought Awkwafina’s look “differ[s] sharply from cliched Chinese beauty standards.” Chen et al (2020) describe the Western beauty ideal as “being thin and tall… having … large eyes, a small nose….” and yet when it comes to casting Asian characters, actors/actresses perpetuating Western stereotypes towards East Asians are somehow preferred. Movies like The Farewell, Shang-Chi, and more tend to feature short, not-skinny female Asian actresses with slanted eyes. Other than the movie industry, fashion does similar things. Luxury brands frequently use Asian models who match the stereotypical “Asian look” in the Western impression.

The conclusion was that age/sex did not have much of an impact on facial recognition but race did. Blacks were much more likely to not be recognized while white faces were more likely, when the recognizer was white.
