         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Prior to the visit, the children will learn about local inventor and philanthropist William Armstrong (1st Baron Armstrong), who built and lived in the house at Cragside. The house was the first in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity.</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>By looking round the house there will be lots to learn about the Victorian era, from differing types of furniture, kitchen appliances and art work. As well as this, we will compare and contrast the differences found in the Japanese room against the rest of the house.</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>This study will meet the following two bullet points taken from the National Curriculum for History:</li></ul><div><br></div><ol><li>"<em>A local history study."</em></li><li>"<em>A study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066."</em></li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Whilst at Cragside the children will witness the Archimedes Screw in action, the screw currently produces 4% of the electricity required onsite. The children will get to see first hand how the water power from the nearby lake is harnessed to create energy.</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>The Den Building site on the estate will also be visited, with the children having the opportunity to design, build and improve dens of their own using sticks, stones, leaves and moss. </li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>This part of the visit will meet the following items taken from the National Curriculum for Design &amp; Technology:</li></ul><div><br></div><ol><li>"<em>Design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria."</em></li><li>"<em>Select from and use a wide range of materials and components, including construction<br>materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their characteristics."</em></li><li>"<em>Build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable."</em></li></ol>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>The children will be allowed to explore the Labyrinth in small groups, using basic compasses to help them navigate the routes. A conversation will be held regarding the four main points on the compass and how to use it properly.</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>Whilst exploring the grounds the children will be encouraged to search for and identify different woodland items such as, pine cones, acorns, different type\colours of flowers, different types of trees and wildlife.</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>The following extracts from the National Curriculum for Geography have been referenced for this section:</li></ul><div><br></div><ol><li>"<em>Use simple compass directions (North, South, East and West) and locational and directional language [for example, near and far; left and right], to describe the location of features and routes on a map."</em></li><li>"<em>Use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to:<br>key physical features, including: beach, cliff, coast, forest, hill, mountain, sea,<br>ocean, river, soil, valley, vegetation, season and weather."</em></li></ol>]]></description>
