He resided in the eastern half of China, between modern-day Shanghai and Beijing. He was a key figure in developing many fundamental Chinese beliefs that still exist today.

In Confucianism, it is vital to respect one's place in all of these relationships and act appropriately based on one's role. A ruler should act with dignity and treat his subjects well, and subjects should obey their ruler without question. A younger brother should respect and look up to an elder brother, and follow the elder brother's commands, but the elder brother must also act responsibly, make a good example, and be fair to the younger brother.
