Behaviors that are controlled by genes with no environmental influences are innate behaviors. This behavior does not have to be learned or practiced, as animals are already born knowing. They can also be called instinctive , which is the ability of animals to perform a behavior for the first time when exposed to stimulus. This behavior will always occur in the same way each time.

There are many benefits of social behaviors. If animals stay in groups, it helps there chances of survival greatly. In groups, they can find food much easier if it's in one area, and foraging together helps capture prey. Protection is also a huge benefit, as one individual animal can't fight off predators, but its whole group can. Traveling becomes easier in groups, as everyone within it is able to keep a lookout and protect one another.

Adaptation is the process of getting used to a new environment and developing new traits to survive. Before innate behaviors, animals had to learn in order to adapt. When animals found themselves in new surroundings, they had to develop survival instincts if they wanted their population to go on living. As more and more of the animals were able to adapt, natural selection chose those new survival traits to be given to the future generation, who have now evolved from their ancestors. This new population now don't have to adapt, as they are now born with innate behaviors.
