If animals stay in groups, it helps there chances of survival greatly. In groups, they can find food much easier if it's in one area, and foraging together helps capture prey. Protection is also a huge benefit, as one individual animal can't fight off predators, but its whole group can. Before innate behaviors, animals had to learn in order to adapt. When animals found themselves in new surroundings, they had to develop survival instincts if they wanted their population to go on living. As more and more of the animals were able to adapt, natural selection chose those new survival traits to be given to the future generation, who have now evolved from their ancestors.
