Solution focused therapy is a short-term therapeutic intervention that focuses on building solutions. It is a future focused therapy that is goal directed as opposed to problem focused. It highlights the client's ability to solve problems then staying focused on why or how the problem was created. Strengths include: short term making it cost and time effective, incorporates strength based approaches, goal oriented and encourages agency. Limitations include: It does not address past problems or explore root causes, focuses on behavior and perceptions not on feelings.

Psychodynamic Theory

Psychodynamic theory focuses on formative life experiences and how these experiences impact relationships and attachments. Psychodynamic theory uses the therapeutic relationship to rebuild and create healthy attachments in the present.

Strengths: Examines history and importance of early childhood attachments and early developmental experiences. Allows provider to help the client build awareness of how prior experiences impact current relationships. Importance of the therapeutic relationship in "retraining" unhealthy attachments (i.e., forming healthy and normative attachments).

Criticisms: Largely based in historical theory and not scientifically tested. Psychodynamic theory is largely based on past experiences and not always representative of later experiences in life. Suggests that there is little room for conscious choices/free will. Psychodynamic theory largely focused on binary gender experiences and primary focus on the male gender.

Narrative theory is a practice theory in which stories about ourselves is shaped by dominant. culture. A strength of the theory is that it can be used to empower the client depending on who the clincian is. A limitation to this theory can be that there is little to no research on multicultural theories such as this one.
