Historical Context = This letter comes from a series of letters written between 1798 and 1828, from the island of Barbados. At this time, Barbados was a colony of England. England, and subsequently Barbados, were participants in the slave trade. This letter is a primary source, written by Elizabeth Fenwick, an English colonist living in Barbados.

Intended Audience = The intended audience of the letter was Mary Hays, a probably friend of Elizabeth, who lived in England. The source identifies that the letters were addressed to Mary Hays and sent to England.

Purpose = This letter was written so that Elizabeth could share and reflect on her experiences, and how they differed from her expectations.

Point of View = Elizabeth's point of view is that of a disappointed, racist colonist/mistress. While she expected Barbados to be a paradise where she would find success, she describes feeling uncomfortable and annoyed around her Black servants. Her unnecessary emphasis on race indicates her racism.

During the late 18th century, when this letter was written, slavery was widely accepted by white colonists and put into practice all around the European lands through the slave trade between regions. The letter written by Elizabeth Fenwick and addressed to Mary Hays states, " But Barbados is not my paradise…the endless trouble and vexation [annoyance] that black servants involve you in..." Being racist towards people of color during this time was sadly normal for white colonizers because it was how they kept control over others and expanded their power.

The intended audience of this letter was Mary Hays, who was a friend of Elizabeth Fenwick. The purpose of the document is to inform Mary Hays about what she has been seeing where she lives, she talks about how the sight of this disgusts her and makes her feel ill about how they are friends with a "mulatto". Her point of view on this is very racist because she dislikes how her white students are talking to someone who isn't the same skin color as them.

This document's contents are contextual through its author and period. This letter was written by Elizabeth Fenwick in 1798-1828 and intended for Mary Hays' audience, likely a friend or associate she communicated her experiences. The purpose of this letter, likely held for Elizabeth, was to project her discriminations toward Africans, especially those enslaved. From her perspective as a white woman growing up in colonies that were deeply embedded in racial discrimination, she felt as the existence of a mixed person (mulatto) was a nuisence or a sort of problem that needed to be addressed.

Elizabeth wrote this letter to rant to Mary about her dislike for "mulatto" slaves, and masters who partake in creating them. She also expressed her disgust with the fact that she suspects one of the slaves who come to help at her all white school is a sibling of two of her students.

Fenwick's point of view was heavily influenced by the fact that she is a slave mistress as well. This account was made around 1831. The audience for this account is likely colonists, typical / African people, and people in power in the colonies. This was for reviewing the harsh treatments involved in slavery and recounting the experiences of being enslaved, and generally, for Mary getting her story out. Her view of the document's contents is that the mistress had taught her several skills to upkeep the household and typical chores. However, she urges she also gained skills in learning ways she'd be beaten and the damage they'd cause, adapting to severe abuse and trauma.

Historical Context: Back in 1798-1828, this letter was written by Elizabeth Fenwick from the island of Barbados. During this time, Barbados was originally a colony of England that participated in the slave trade. Elizabeth Fenwick herself was an English colonist who lived in Barbados, using this primary source to voice her own experiences.

Intended Audience: This source was later found out to be sent to England, addressed to a certain someone named Mary Hay. She may or may not be a friend of Elizabeth Fenwick.

Purpose: Elizabeth Fenwick's letter was to explain the emotions bubbling up inside her, along with any personal experiences that she was ready to complain about to Mary Hays.

Point of View: Elizabeth's point of view demonstrates a racist colonist who is easily bothered by her peers of different color. The moment she saw two sisters with a black fourteen-year-old brother, her immediate reaction was one of revolted expression when they were on their way to receive food. With resentful passion, she writes to Mary Hays about her urge to beat the boy.

a. Mary Price talks about the hardships that she goes through with her mistress and how she is whipped and beat severely. This is shown in source D when it says "she caused me to know the exact differences between the

smart [inflicted pain] of the rope, the cart-whip, and the cow-skin, when applied to my naked body by her own cruel

hand. And there was scarcely any more punishment more dreadful than the blows I received on my face and head from

her hard heavy fist. She was a fearful woman, and a savage mistress to her slaves." This connects to global historical context because back then slaves were beat and it was a very common thing during slavery.

b. In source E the author reflects the social patterns that was going in the the period when Elizabeth felt I'll when she saw a darker skin person talking to one of her white students. These two ladies are our students, and he is their own brother. I can tell from the likeness he bears to

their father. It is a common case and not thought of as horror. This shows how the authors attitude reflects the ideas of people back then because they felt a specific way towards colored people.

a. Elizabeth's letter directly reflects what a person could be thinking or living through within the colonies, like Barbados, which, of many colonies, took part in slavery during the 1700s. Her speaking points reflect the use of "Black Codes", limiting areas and confrontations between colonists and Africans.

b. Elizabeth's thinking and complaints towards enslaved Africans referred to them as nuisances in Barbados. The reasoning for this is, Barbados was her ideal picture of wealth and status. In turn, this correlates with the use of "Black Codes" that restrict African Americans from certain liberties as a means of control. c. Her feeling of disdain for Africans being in her ideal environment showcases the clear social separation that people in authority have made through such laws as "Black Codes". This likely was influenced through the desire to bring Europeans to the colonies, with the systemic place of racism being the formed norm in the 1700s, it's likely they catered to the empowerment and comfort of those racist speaking points.
