Remote Teaching and Learning by EUN Partnership aisbl

Since early March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all facets of life, including school operations. The shift to remote instruction was no ordinary transition, and what occurred wasn’t online instruction per se — it is more accurate to describe it as emergency remote teaching (ERT), defined as “a temporary shift of instructional delivery to an alternate delivery mode due to crisis circumstances” (Hodges et al., 2020). Considering this experience and the status of your school before the pandemic, let us reflect on the use of digital technologies in remote teaching and learning and how this has shaped our views of digital technologies in education for the coming years. In this document: https://ec.europa.eu/education/sites/default/files/document-library-docs/selfie-questions-remote-sept20_en.pdf you can find some questions that can help your reflection (5=strongly agree, 1=strongly disagree). Pick three and share your reflection here.

If you are a school leader, how do you see your own role in driving forward the use of digital technologies in your school?

Since our school is a vocational school, most of our courses are applied courses.
As a school administrator, I wrote a project on simulation software in distance education and at the point of access to distance simulation programs through a development agency. but it didn't pass due to a small mistake. the content of my project is more applications and more digital transformation. It was a digital transformation project that would provide instant data that the teacher could control, which could be accessed remotely with a simple mobile phone. However, I did not give up. We continue to work for the establishment of such a system in our school.

At the preparation stage all the teachers had an individual training activity to get acquainted with the apps and tools. Students were taught how to use them at the IT lessons. Technology Mentor recorded video instruction. So it worked very well.
- Teacher collaboration on resources. Before the pandemic time teacher shared their materials only with colleagues, who teach the same subject. Now we have a school Google Disk, where all the necessary documents are kept and teacher plan their collaboration and share.
- Teacher access to infrastructure. Recently the school got a significant amount of laptops from the government, the speed of Internet connection was improved. The school got a mobile class. The only problem is a student's access to the Internet.

My school has done a lot during Remote Teaching and Learning. It has created a digital platform where students can communicate with teachers and find assignments, activities, schedules and resources. But often during the Remote Teaching and Learning some students did not connect, some due to connection problems, others because they did not want to. In my school, teachers use digital tools to help students to handle challenges and difficulties they face when learning. In our school, teachers provide students with online material introducing new topics, in order to use class time for interactive activities. In my school, some teachers provide students with online material that introduces new topics, in order to use the lesson time for interactive activities. Teachers help each other a lot in solving basic technical problems when using digital technologies. Some training courses are offered for teachers on the technology used to support distance teaching and learning. Many teachers follow courses offered online. (including distance learning approaches, online, blended). Few teachers collaborate to create a repository of shared online resources.

In the beginning there were some problems with the use of online classrooms (did not know how to use it, non-functioning). We tried to help each other with tips, phone calls or mails. After some time we could join seminars about distance teaching and learning. Pupils did not have computers, so the school provided them equipment. But some places did not have internet connection or was very weak. This is stiil a problem. In program with a lower educational standard, we mainly used recordings and interactive exercises. Pupils mostly knew how to do it as we did this before panemic.

Before the lockdown in March 2020, my school hardly used any technology at all, so at that time, teachers and leaders were faced with the unknown. I had the chance to learn the first thing about Google classroom during one of the exchange programs in the USA, and so I decided to introduce it to the teachers and administrators in my school. We have been using this learning environment ever since, and everybody has become better at using it. As a leader, I provide teachers and students with the help they need when they face technical issues, and during the last year or so, both students and teachers received from the school the devices they need (mainly tablets and internet cards).

The students managed to learn quite quickly how to use the platform, but, being in the period when they learn to write, it was quite difficult. But, despite all the difficulties, all the students managed to learn to write in capital letters. Cancel this we will learn handwriting, and in Romania it seems that there will be a period of online learning. I hope that my students will be able to write as correctly as possible with handwriting.

As a school leader I feel I need to keep up to date with technology and how it can be used in blended teaching and learning. This way I can support my teachers better. I try to encourage them to take part in as many digital initiatives as possible. However, COVID has increased the pressure on teachers and they are overwhelmed with work. This makes my job even more difficult.

1.There is a central digital platform or online space where students can navigate to their assignments, activities, schedule, resources and communicate with you
Yes. Our Ministry of National Education has an education information network called EBA. It was not actively used by many teachers when the pandemic started. In fact, many teachers did not try to adapt until some time after schools closed. Then they got used to it. Not every teacher is a stranger to this subject anymore. However, now I see that many of them use classical teaching methods.
2.In our school students learn how to manage their time using digital Technologies
No . Unfortunately. Because every teacher gives more importance to the lessons.
3.In our school students learn how to use digital technologies to ask for help when they have difficulties with their learning
For older students, this might be it. It should be stated that digital tools will be an important factor in learning by collaborating with the families of younger students. Learning without digital is no longer sufficient. Efforts to reach these competencies at an early age will pay off in the future.
4.In our school, students learn how to use digital technologies to ask for help when they encounter difficulties in using software/apps used by you
This is not possible as our age group is small.

1. We use Teams as a central digital platform in my first school, and Google Classroom in my second school. Before Teams both schools used to use Yammer, but very soon realized that this is not an adequate platform. The beginning of need to use some platforms was very hard, but now everything is set up.

2. I think that there is a lack of will among students to use technology actively when the teaching goes online. If we are talking about synchronous online teaching the things stay OK, but when it goes asynchronous students keep very hard to manage their learning timetable.

3. Students mostly ask for help if they can not resolve the problem that indeed isn't a real problem, but they just didn't try to solve it themselves. And the most common problem they mention is a network issue.

4. There are some tools that might be helpful, but usually we teach students how to use digital technology when we are face-to-face in the classroom.

5. Flipped classroom is very welcomed and very useful when teaching online.

6. School is supportive but we, teachers, often help each other.

7. There are different types of education inside our school and meant to the teachers.

The term Emergency Remote Teaching and Learning describes accurately what happened in Romania, too, when the pandemic started. Most of the teachers were "old school" and had some issues adapting. But some were fortunate to have included technology in class even before the pandemic. I had an Edmodo account and three classes there. As we had access to the Internet from the classroom, we would often use our devices to go online, mostly to play Kahoot, Baamboozle, Quizlet or watch content on Youtube. So, before becoming mandatory, I used digital tools to enhance motivation, the "cherry on top". Since March 2020, we realized how important technology is to keep connected. More or less forcefully all teachers in my school became digitally literate and adapted to the new era. We implemented a LMS - Google Classroom and led virtual conferences with our students. Most teachers also felt the need for professional development in this area. So, here I am, too! 🎧💻

When we had to stay at home and do emergency remote teaching, we used Google Classroom, Zoom and EBA Portal to keep it up. We recorded videos, so our students could also learn classes even when they had to be offline. That was very effective, and shaped the future of education without a doubt.

In my school, teachers provide online material, but the speed of the Internet at school sometimes does not allow students to use their technological devices in teaching. That is why we invest in equipment and try to improve learning conditions. - 3

1. There is a central digital platform or online space (Classroom) where students can navigate to their assignments, activities, schedule, resources and communicate with you. In our school, we use the app Teams to communicate and get in touch with our students outside the hish school and just in case some of us are unable to come to class. The teacher can ask their students to do different tasks and upload them to be corrected. We can also upload some links or interesting information related to what is been covered in the course. 2. In our school students learn how to manage their time using digital technologies I would not say this actually happens at my high school. We as teacher try to inform and encourage them to organize themselves and spend the appropiate amount of time with technology. But we only resort to some advices and talks, which I do not really think they actually work 3. In our school students learn how to use digital technologies to ask for help when they have difficulties with their learning We use Teams to be connected after the lesson has finished. I think it is the mentality some students have about schooling. By time they started appreciating the flexibility and the quick access of material, that they themselves started wanting me to upload all resources used in class to be able to access them again at home. During online learning, most students learnt to use calendar to access online lessons but still there were those ones who waited for my direct call.

3. In house training Technological issues (5) - During school closure and online teaching, a vast array of online courses were organized by the Education Department varying for basic online tools to complex use of MSTeams Assignments and Notebook.

In our school we have adopted google classroom and also the electronic register to improve communication with students and parents. The pandemic with all the problems created by the lockdown has had a positive impact on the implementation of the school's technological resources. The various initiatives activated for the accompaniment and support of teachers in difficulty have certainly improved collaboration between teachers. In my experience as a teacher, having had previous experience with eTwinning projects has made it easier for pupils to approach PBL.

Digital technology in our school has been strongly implemented and inevitably promoted during the pandemic months, in which everyone -teachers, stakeholders, and students- had to cope with the urgent need to go on with education activities. As for the points listed:
1. school stakeholders created a google meet platform for students and teachers to develop online lessons, assign homework and activities, post videos, pictures, even give and mark tests. teachers even learned to use interactive strategies to let students cooperate online.
2. Students mainly learned to ask for help through e-mail, when in difficulty in carrying out their assignments or in case of presenting their doubts while developing their assignments
3. Yes, some teachers ( mainly the more pioneering and young ones) experimented the introduction of new topics to students- as expected in the flipped classroom strategy- providing them with online resources in order to create videos, video tutorials, presentations, mainly with group works. This fostered their creativity and cooperation. In my opinion, though, they still need to learn to study online or traditional paper resources, to be able to use them more confidently
4. Our school leader took advantage of our school ITC technician, to help teachers and students solve technical issues. He has been really helpful for everyone. it is still very difficult for teachers to be able to cope with technical problems, we are overloaded with massive red-tape fulfillment, which prevents us from enjoying in-service didactic and technical training

Shift to remote teaching and learning in High school Ivanec was faced pretty readily. Through EU project we have developed our own ICT portal for online teaching and learning based on Moodle. Many teachers and students in our school have used it before. For those teachers who haven't used it before we organised a training and our school was prepared quickly for the remote teaching and learning. Also, the benefit of our own system, closed only for our teachers and students, on our own server, assured us continuity of teaching and learning. The school aslo provided laptops for all students who didn't have the equipment for learning from home. From then, digital dompetences of teachers and students have increased a lot.

The situation with using ICT is much better now than before the pandemic because we were forced to learn the basics but we still have a lot of work ahead of us if we want to make it an integral part of our teaching. Especially, if we want to teach children how to effectively use the technology so that it isn't time consuming but rather helpful.

At first, it was a bit challenging to reach all my pupils because not all of them had the necessary equipment, but we managed somehow. My pupils are in Class 6 now and we are still using Edmodo for communication, assignments and project work.

During the 2020 lockdown, I mostly created and shared different videos (PowToon, Renderforest and Biteable are my top 3 video makers) and quizzes / games (WordWall, Liveworksheets, Cram, EduCandy, Quizziz and LearningApps are my pupils' favourites) with my pupils. I also used Edpuzzle for creating interactive videos and tracking my pupils' progress. When my pupils returned to school, we reused all these materials and spent our time in the classroom more efficiently, by practising more or working on projects for example.

As for the school infrastructure, sadly, not many teachers can access the digital devices or the computer lab, so the solution is to bring our own and sometimes ask our pupils to do the same.

1.) There is a central digital platform or online space where students can navigate to their assignments, activities, schedule, resources, and communicate with you- 5
Our ideal situation would be - all teachers are using Moodle as a digital learning platform. We agreed already some years ago that Moodle has to be our LMS. We have a good Moodle support system, knowledge, and processes for implementing LMS in our everyday teaching. In my opinion, the main problem is- teachers are not very open to changes.
2.) In our school students learn how to use digital technologies to ask for help when they have difficulties with their learning- 5
Every student gets a personal e-mail account when she is entering into the learning process, so this is a way to ask for very easy help on sharing their opinions. easy, yes, but not always a quick way. For communication is also possible in Moodle forums, and group social media account, and Gmail chat also. At the beginning of the school year, every group and teacher agree on what are the channels of communication.
3.) Our school supports us to learn how to solve basic technical problems when using digital technologies -5
We have a well-functioning ICT managing department for supporting ICT systems in school, and also there a specialist in digital learning tools, we regularly provide support for our teachers and students. Unfortunately, our road to digitalization in teaching and learning is not always very narrow- the process takes times and the main reason is "old habits die hard" :)

5 – In house training. I am a happy teacher because in my school we got training on how to use different devices and apps. During 2016 – 2018, I have coordinated the activities implemented by the Romanian team within the Erasmus+ Project “Web 2.0 Tools in Education” in which the participant schools tested and applied some didactic activities using free Web 2.0 tools. The most important result of this project was that teachers and students were already accustomed to use online tools when the pandemic started. Moreover, I have held and I am holding workshops for colleagues in order to help them using different online tools.

3 – Solving technical issues that may arise while online teaching. I consider that our school should pay more attention to this detail. This isn’t an objective itself in our school because we have a person in charge with technical issues; if we have a technical problem, we can call her and she helps us. Moreover, I am a pretty technical person, so I ask her what can I do in order to solve a problem and she helps me.

5 – Autonomy in learning and resilience are important in our teaching activities. I provide my students different means to solve various problems, I create contexts of reflection and metacognition. Our students get tutorials and learn how to use a large variety of tools.
