This is a picture of Pompeii, which is a large archaeological site located in Italy. Pompeii was once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city which was buried in meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The site was lost for about 1500 years until it’s initial discovery in 1599 and broader discovery in 1748.

This website article goes into detail of how archaeologists work side by side with computer engineers, radiologists, and orthodontists to scan plaster-cast remains of 86 individuals, who perished when Pompeii was ruined by volcanic eruption in 79 AD. These highly detailed scans, provide a better look at the remains’ teeth, bones, and facial features. These details teach researchers more about the gender, age, diet, and health of these individuals.

This article gives an alternate view on Pompeii’s remains. It goes on to question if Pompeii is an ancient or modern wonder? All the remains of the individuals who perished, are made with plaster of Paris, or resin. When ashes and lava covered the bodies of the people, over time the bodies decayed and left cavities which were filled with the plaster to create life like 3D statues of the people in the position they died in. These statues are then replicated repeatedly. They are displayed in museums, and also sold as valuable artifacts. The replicated statues aren’t of the same significance, however are an archaeologist’s dream, since they can be made and sold for a lot of money.

This website news article explains on how there are different theories for the cause of death for the people in Pompeii. Research suggests that the inhabitants didn’t die of suffocation when Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, however from sudden exposure to extremely high temperatures in a pyroclastic cloud. After analyzing nearly, 100 skeletal casts, testing bone tissues, and creating simulations resembling the Vesuvius eruption, scientists conclude that people were killed instantly by the deadly temperatures. Other scientists disagree with this finding, and point to the letters of Pliny and Younger which were written 25 years after the eruption. In the letters it was written that those of Pompeii’s inhabitants who weren’t killed by falling rocks were subsequently suffocated by ashes and gas. In my personal opinion I believe there is some Ancient Wisdom involved here. How can scientists conclude based on letters that were written 25 years after the eruption, when scientific proof suggests that people were killed instantly. The reasons to belief include ancient wisdom, and also lead to ideological support in which some claim it’s moral, or politically correct.

This is a picture of the plaster casts of some of the individuals that perished in the catastrophe. The individuals died immediately due to the sudden extreme change of temperature, and were also then covered with ashes. Archaeologists found that over the time the bodies decayed and left cavities where the body once existed. Plaster was poured into these cavities to make a 3d form of the actual individual in the position they died in.

This video explains how the roman empire had rule along the whole Mediterranean Sea. Pompeii was an important port city under their rule. It was an important commercial sector, and consisted of 20,000 people. Since it was a port, it was also a hot centre for sailors. For their entertainment there were many restaurants, bars, bathhouses, and brothels. The video goes on to explain the intricate design of plumbing in the city.
