Telling kids to focus on their weight instead of their health is dangerous (Newsela)

This article first states the new free memberships to Weight Watchers, that started offering to teenagers of 13 years old. During this time, teenagers are going through many hormonal changes. Their brain hasn't fully developed yet, making them easily influenced. When they start dieting, all they will think about is their weight. This increases the risk of eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia. It also increases the risk of weight gain. It sounds strange- having a risk of weight gain. But when people eat smaller portions and less of a certain food group every day, their body starts craving the food that they cut out. All they will ever think about is food. And when they do finally take a cheat day, they gain weight. More than expected. That's because of our digestive system. Your metabolism slows down when you don't eat as much food as you once did, causing you to gain more weight.

This article is similar to the one from Newsela., but the central topic is a tad different. In this article, it shows that children encouraged to diet in their teen years are more likely to suffer from obesity than children who were not. 25 percent of adults who were surveyed about this topic grew to be overweight because of their teen years.
