I think the fence is there because their families did not want them to be with each other because if the color of their skin. Back then due to the color of your skin you were not aloud to play with the other race. - alexis Conklin

I think the fence is their to seperate the blacks and whites so kids can't play together and parents can't make friends. I think the fence is their to divide the 2 neighborhoods so that only blacks be with blacks and whites be with whites. It wasn't the different families that didn't want their kids to play and be happy it was the government back then where they didn't want blacks in their town. It affects the characters friend ship by not letting the two girls be together and play but the girls did play jump rope together and sit on the fence instead of going over so there parents wouldn't get mad at them. The 2 girls were happy playing together and I think that more girl of all races would be crossing that fence just to play and sit on the fence together.
