It wasn't the different families that didn't want their kids to play and be happy it was the government back then where they didn't want blacks in their town. It affects the characters friend ship by not letting the two girls be together and play but the girls did play jump rope together and sit on the fence instead of going over so there parents wouldn't get mad at them.
