In the past astronomers had different ways to learn more about space. In Britain, before writing existed, people used stones to keep track of the motion of the Sun and Moon.  Astronomers had many ideas and theories. Some theories were right and some were wrong. One reason their theories can be wrong is because they did not understand the laws of motion. For example, they did not know that a force (which is gravity) controls the movement of the planet Earth. But as time passed, in 1608 Hans Lipperhey discovered and invented the telescope. A telescope is an optical instrument that is designed to make distant objects (that we might not be able to see with our own eyes) be magnified. Later on, Newton explained the why planets orbit the Sun by explaining his theory of gravity. As time passed, the understanding of astronomy changed. A constellation is a pattern of bright, highly visible stars. But to astronomers, constellations are specific regions of the sky around those patterns. Astronomers have divided the celestial sphere into 88 of these constellations. The celestial sphere is how we see the universe from our position on earth. It’s Basically an imaginary ball with us in the center. In ancient times constellations represented some kinds of picture. The pictures were associated with myths. Most of the constellation we know came for ancient Greece. Rome and the middle east.  But ancient cultures from all over the world had different systems, based on their own mythologies. The stars in all the constellations are part of the milky way galaxy same as us. Because of The Earth’s rotation, there are many different perspectives. They rise in the east and set in the west.  One constellation known as Ursa Minor contains Polaris also known as the northern star. Since ancient times, sailors, explorers and more used it to figure out which way was north. Twelve of the most known constellations are on the same plain. As the Earth’s orbit around the sun. They are called Zodiacs. Ancient astronomers used Zodiac as calendars. And also like a star map just like today.
