Tester

The main role of the tester is to find any bugs in a system once it has been created, and to rectify them before the system goes live. All aspects of the system should be tested, including the associated manual procedures. The testers may not have been involved in the development of the system. The tester will often deliberately try to 'break' the system.

The tester's responsibilities include developing and using test plans to test the programs and modules that are included in the system. The tester must ensure that the system is free from bugs by using a variety of tests. These may include white box and black box tests. It is the responsibility of the tester to ensure that a range of test data is used, including normal, extreme and abnormal, to coverall aspects of the system.

The test plans will need to be created to enable a third party to carry out the testing without having to refer to the tester who created the plans. The tester will also need to record the results of the tests, usually on a test log. The test plans and logs may form part of the technical documentation which is passed to the end user when the system has been implemented.

The systems designer will build on the findings of the systems analyst in order to design the new system. The designer's role is central to the process of designing, developing and implementing the defined requirements of the system. The roles and responsibilities of the systems analyst and designer are very similar and, if roles have to be combined in a project team, these roles can be given to the same person.

The role usually involves planning and designing the system so that hardware, software and communication technologies all integrate and interact. The systems designer will be involved with the development of the new system until it has been implemented.

The roles and responsibilities of a system designer may include: completing the requirements analysis; working with programmers and the end users; planning and designing the system; confirming the systems analyst's proposal; developing, documenting and revising system design procedures, test procedures and quality standards; and creating an architectural design with the necessary specifications for the hardware, software, data and staff resources.

The main role of the systems analyst is to analyse the existing system. During the analysis the analyst will investigate the current system using appropriate investigative methods.

The results of the analysis will enable the system analyst to assess the suitability of the current system for upgrading.

After the investigations, the systems analyst must develop a plan for developing the proposed system. As part of this the analyst must specify: the procedures involved; how the data is to be captured; the software required to process the data; how the data is to be output; the hardware that is required; and how the staff will be trained to use the new system.

The systems analyst is mainly responsible for the development of the feasibility report including the requirements specification.

A major part of the role of the systems analyst is to liaise with the staff in the organisation. Those who work in the organisation will have expert knowledge of how the current system works and how it could be improved.

The main role of the project manager is to plan and control the whole project. The project manager is, if required, responsible for identifying potential problems and issues, and if they arise, for rectifying them.

After consulting with the end user and other members of the project team, the project manager will set the deadlines for each stage of the project. This task is completed at the beginning of the project to ensure that the system being developed is delivered to the end user on schedule. This enables the project manager to have, at any given point during the development, an overall understanding of how the project is progressing. This may, if the project is falling behind the defined time schedule, involve the rescheduling of any tasks, and associated resources such as time, staff and money. One of the other associated roles of the project manager is to oversee the project team.

The budget allocated by the end user will need to be agreed at the start of the project. The project manager is responsible for ensuring that the budget is adhered to and that any slippage in costs is notified to the end user.

The project manager must ensure that all the associated project reports and documentation are correctly completed during the project. This may involve consultation between all members of the project team to ensure that the documentation provides an accurate and complete details.

The system life cycle is an iterative process, so the project manager is responsible for ensuring that each stage of the life cycle is completed before the next stage is started. As each stage or task is completed the project manager should provide progress reports to the end user of the system.

The programmer will create software that is required for the system being developed. A programmer can be a specialist in one area of computer programming or be a generalist who writes code for many kinds of software. Most systems, unless very specialised, such as for air traffic control, will be programmed by an applications programmer.

The programmer will be responsible, within the project team, for developing the applications system or modifying an existing software solution that will meet the defined needs of the system.

When the system has been developed, then one of the responsibilities of the programmer is to create the technical documentation.
