"Rhetorical Feminism" as Defined by Glenn

"Rhetorical feminism is a tactic (actually a set of tactics)- a theoretical stance- that is responsive to the ideology that is feminism and to the key strategy that is feminist rhetoric. Anchored in hope, rhetorical feminism offers ways to disidentify with hegemonic rhetoric, with the dominant rhetorical histories, theories, and practices articulated in Western culture. As a tactic, then, rhetorical feminism is in a constant state of response, reassessment, and self-correction. Rhetorical feminism encats goals that are dialogic and transactional rather than monologic and reactional and attends to (provisionally) marginalized audiences that may or may not have the power to address or resolve exigence. Rhetorical feminism employs and respects vernaculars and experiences, recognizing them as sources of knowledge."

"Feminist Rhetoric" as Defined by Glenn

"Feminist rhetoric is, first and foremost, a set of long-established practices that advocate a political position of rights and responsibilities that certainly includes the equality of women and Others... The term Others resonates with women, people of color, or people disenfranchised on the basis of their race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, ability, language, or all the possible intersections of these identity markers... Feminist rhetoric also focuses on the rights, contributions, expertise, opportunities, and histories of marginalized groups and supports coalitions across and among these groups. It relies on rhetorical concepts and practices, including a response to an exigence, attention to audience, arguments based on reason and evidence, purposeful and appropriate language, and, of course, the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos."

... I illustrate the notion of recalling the shapes of childhood with reference to a life story. I cannot truly say "my life story." That would imply that, spiderlike, I have somehow spun a web solely from the stuff of my own being, sibling and maternal relationships, political and professional phenomena, and even aging and decline from "my self." I am not so "individual" that I can claim to be free from the shaping influence of contexts. Nor can I forget that, conscious as I have tried to be, I have lived inside a whole variety of ideologies and discursive practices, in spite of trying - through resistance and critique - to liberate myself."
