My name is Marie King and I have been a tutor in this subject for almost three years. I am a secondary school English teacher and have taught for about eighteen years! I have worked in the UK, in rural and urban Australian schools and a range of educational contexts. 

I am passionate about literacy and the experience of texts. Relationships are at the heart of my work and I believe in educational equity. I am curious about learning styles and approaches in students. I aim to release potential and empower.

I have a BA Arts (Hons) in English, a B.Ed (Sec) and a MA (Screen Studies). My educational interests have been in representations of gender and power relationships.I hope to embark on more study in the future.


In terms of any advice I can give you about starting the course it is only that

1. There are no stupid questions, if there were I would probably be the queen of stupid questions

2. Always communicate any issues or situations via email as soon as they arise and I will do what I can to support you and take full advantage of the university policies.

3. Please 'talk' in the discussions in the virtual classroom (you need a USB headset-to have the right sound quality) as this makes for a richer experience.(This is also true if you are a committed poster to the forum)

My children are a 10 year old Olivia,  an 8 year old boy called Charlie, a 6 year old girl Annabel and a 1 year old boy George. I understand what it is to live in a house where you are totally out numbered! 

I believe my children give me a lot to think about in relation to education and my experiences within the education system as well.

I am happily married to a teacher librarian, so basically we are a very 'booky', 'watchy' house! This is not to say that I am an expert speller because I think we all have our struggles there! Or at least most of us, so don't feel self conscious of spelling in the chat box in the virtual class room or on the forum!

I have wanted to be a primary school teacher teaching students a kitchen/garden programme and using my degree to be able to relief teacher so that I can have flexibility when I start a family.

I am currently married to an Electrician. 5yrs this year. He is a fantastic support when I study, dealing with me being all emotional. Uni seems to bring it out of me.

For as long as I remember I have always wanted to be a teacher, working with young kids and helping to educate them. I remember being younger and making my little brother and sister sit in the living room with all of their school gear out so that I could 'teach' them, which was only the 5 times tables since that's really all I could teach at the age of 5. I have also always been involved in helping out and working with kids throughout my whole life, this includes helping out at Sunday school, babysitting, mentoring, swim teaching, oshc, working in play clubs and residential care. 

It wasn't hard for me to realize that teaching was the right profession for me as I love watching students grow and learn about the world around them. So far the external aspect of study has really enabled me to study flexibly allowing me to work more. 

I have always known I wanted to be a teacher and said it was what I was going to do since I was young however at the end of Year 12 I had a change in heart and started a degree in nursing instead. After one semester of studying nursing I knew it wasn't what I wanted to be doing so at the start of the following year I started my Bachelor of Education and haven't looked back since.

I am studying a Bachelor of Education with a Primary Specialisation. I will complete the course over five years (due to finish next year) as I commenced in 2015 when my son was 18 months old and I was pregnant with my daughter. Thankfully I have a very supportive husband and family who all help out when required.

Fast forward to now and they are 2 and 4, soon to be 3 and 5 in November. I also have a dog, named Bam Bam who is 8.

My passion for teaching has always been there, however I fell into a well paying job and took on a mortgage so I didn't take
the leap to begin university studies until I had my son. 

My previous work includes working for the Federal Government in a review role and working as a emergency foster carer. The emergency care work ignited my passion and really made a profound impact on why I wanted to become a teacher. 

My current job is as a SSO at a local primary school. I have gained a wealth of knowledge from this role. 

English and Wellbeing are my specialisations, with a added interest in working with children from trauma backgrounds or presenting with barriers affecting their learning.

I am doing this degree externally because it give me the chance to be able to work full-time and be able to pay off my home.  


I have a husband and two fur babies. They are; A cat that is named Molly and a dog, that is named Angus. 


I have always had teaching in the back on my mind, but going to university scared me and I had no self confidence that I could actually do it. I decided that instead I would go to TAFE and become an Enrolled Nurse (I had people in my family that are nurses). About 3 years into my nursing career, I found that it wasn’t my passion and it wasn’t my ‘forever’ career. So, one day I decided that I would apply for university (thinking I wouldn’t get in) and I got in. It has been the best decision of my life! Teaching gives me a feeling that makes my heart smile. When I get up in front of the classroom or even just help students one on one, I just know that being a teacher is what I was meant to be! 


I can’t wait to help students be the best they can be, and help them achieve their dreams.

Sam is 4 years old, Louis is almost 3 and Lilly is 18 months old. My three girls are all grown; our youngest is completing her own University studies and our Grandies and their Mum are all living at home with us and our little furry baby Oska, the Maltese Poodle, so life is busy! I too understand how crazy life gets!  Saying that, my family are everything to me, and the joy that we are getting as we watch our Grandies grow and discover the world is priceless. My husband of 38 years is retired after bypass surgery earlier this year, and is “the Fixer” around our home, as the Grandies call him. 

Prior to having children I worked in a variety of clerical roles, but once our youngest was at school I went back to school too! I have been an educator for 22 years, working as a Special Education teacher, an Aboriginal Education Teacher and Primary Classroom Teacher. Most of my teaching has been in Special Education and the Early Years/ Primary classroom from Years 1-5. More recently I have also taught at UniSA in Science Education, Numeracy and English Education 2.

Teaching is the other joy of my life and I count myself very lucky to be able to go to work each day and love what I do! No two days are ever the same. I have a passion for Nature Play, love getting outdoors, gardening and reading. I love instilling a joy for reading and interacting with texts, our world, communicating with others and connecting learning to student-driven learning projects.

Seeing the kids - and the big kids - faces light up during this whole experience has been so beautiful, and I will probably be at one of both of them again this year, so if you recognise me there, say hey :)
- I have two nephews (1 1/2 & 5) who I adore. I don't have much experience with early years aged children, so seeing their development (particularly in their vocabulary) is endlessly fascinating for me. They're also very challenging which is also great haha
- I love to travel and feel at ease when I am away from home for some reason.

I didn't know what I wanted to do until I was 17, after experiences with overseas exchanges and international students. Seeing the joy on someones face when they have that realisation or breakthrough in learning something is a huge part of why I want to be here doing this. I want people to enjoy learning, even if they're not someone who is traditionally "academically inclined". Education is so important and shouldn't be something that people are forced to do, but something they want to do. I believe in learning something new each day...even the tiniest thing.

I am 26 and am studying part-time. This is my fourth year and I am due to finish at the end of next year.

I spent 6 years working in retail then got into childcare. I have now been working with children for the last 5 years. I have undertaken roles in child care, occasional care, rural care, playgroup and in schools for SSO and OSHC work. This has given me the opportunity to work with a wide range of ages from birth right up to year 10. However, I prefer preschool aged children and the early years of school. 

I always wanted to be a Preschool Teacher until my recent placement in a school which I absolutely loved. Now, I wish to become a Reception Teacher. 

During my free time, I love baking, gardening, catching up with friends and doing pilates.

Wow I loved reading everyone's stories.
My name is Caroline. I've only used padlet a couple of times. Technology amazes me. I'm in awe of so many ways we can use it  and do presentations.
I live in Ceduna on the Far West Coast of South Australia. I used live further out and run  our  own farm with my husband and three children but  we sold it 8 years ago and moved to Ceduna. Prior to selling the farm I lived in a second home with our children in the neighbouring town so our children could attend a school face-to-face. My husband and I lived apart for most of the time and we did lots of commuting between the farm and our second home. 
I have three wonderful children who are now adults and live in different parts of the state.
My reasons for studying later in life was due to me wanting to ensure my children had support while they received their education. I began my studies when my two daughters began their studies at University. Both now have graduated so hopefully it will be my turn soon.
I am currently studying my Bachelor of Early Childhood Education. 
I have had quite a few challenges while studying primarily due to my health.
I have worked in childcare, pre-school and supported students in reception through to Year 12, predominantly with students with special needs, impairments and disability. When I was younger I never thought this would be an occupation I would do. 
I would like to do further studies in Special Education but for now I will focus on my Bachelor degree.
