Discrimination against Muslims in America is a big problem with many causes. Discrimination against anyone is a problem because it creates unequal opportunities and unfair treatment. America is supposed to be the land of the free, yet discrimination still affects us. Discrimination against Muslims in America has increased in recent times, and there are a couple main causes. The incidents involving Islamic State terrorists in recent times has caused a great flare of suspicion toward Muslims in America. This is also because of the inauguration of President Trump and Executive Order 13769, The Muslim Travel Ban, creating even more prejudice and unfair treatment toward Muslims and further weakening the trust between Muslims and other Americans. President Trump retweeted an anti-Muslim British groups’ videos, showing support for their racist videos. President Trump’s support for anti-Muslim groups has further increased discrimination against Muslims in recent times. These incidents have been the root causes of the recent influx in discrimination against Muslims.

How has the problem affected the community directly?

Discrimination against Muslims in America has affected the community in many ways. Based on a Pew survey in 2017, 62 percent of American people in the survey don’t believe Islam to be a mainstream part of society. Muslims also experience hate crimes and unequal treatment because of their religion. One example of a crime involving religion was on January 28, 2017. An arsonist burned down a Mosque in southern Texas oil town of Victoria and assaulted a member of the mosque. He then pleaded guilty but was not charged with a hate crime. Many Islamic people expressed concern that the trial was unequal and the man was not charged because of discrimination towards Muslims. Another way this has affected the community was Executive Order 13769, The Muslim Ban. This prevented Muslims from multiple countries to enter the United States. This put many people in danger, as they were not able to immigrate to escape war or any dangerous conditions. These are some of the ways it has affected the community.

Why should the rest of the world be concerned about this issue?

There are many reasons the rest of the world should be concerned about discrimination against Muslims in America. America is supposed to be the land of freedom. Based on a Pew study in 2017, 76 percent of people surveyed believe America is not free, and discrimination and prejudice affects the political world. The rest of the world should be concerned because if the US experiences discrimination, the country based on religious freedom, other countries without religious freedom will experience even more racism and discrimination. Extreme racism in other countries can lead to mass genocide, like the Holocaust. Racial and cultural diversity is important to learn more and to reach an understanding between each other to facilitate cooperation and collaboration. For these reasons, the rest of the world should be concerned about discrimination against Muslims in America.

I woke up to my ringing phone. “Who is calling me in the dead of night?” I wonder. I picked up and heard a devastated voice. “Our mosque has burned down. God help us!” I rushed to my car and went to the mosque. There were flames licking the outside of the copper dome. I saw some other members of our small Muslim community weeping. The fire department was already there, helping extinguish the fiery building. “How did this happen?” I asked. Nobody knew. “How are we supposed to fix this? My mosque is my life, my belief, and my hope. What am I to do?” I questioned myself in despair. This mosque was where my children learned, where we went to socialize, and we went every day to pray. We stayed up all night watching the wreck. In the morning we went to look through. Everything was destroyed except marble slabs with quotes from the Quran. I was trying not to break down in tears. Later that week we learned the fire was started by an arsonist. But, we will rebuild and remake with love. We will try to forgive and live on. Hopefully, this disaster will never happen again.

What is currently being done to address this problem?

Luckily, there are things being done to help and reduce discrimination against Muslims. Many activists like Johari Abdul-Malik and support groups like the Islamic Networks Group. Mahdi Bray is a Muslim-American rights activist and human equality activist. He works to reach equal rights for all races in the United States. The Islamic Networks Group is a non-profit organization that counters prejudice and discrimination towards Muslim-Americans. Although Muslims experience discrimination, there is hope in numbers. Muslims in the US are a racially diverse group with growing numbers. Consequently, the more Muslims that there are in the US, will make them a mainstream part of American society and reduce discrimination. All these things will help stop bigotry against Muslims in America.
