What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

Admiration. The speaker says, "All these I feel or am", showing the reader how he is an empath to all people in pain or who have faced injustice. Walt Whitman uses intelligent diction to express the feelings of those who cannot; of the people who suffer and are blamed for being alive. The poet says, "The mother of old, condemned for a witch, burnt with dry wood, her children gazing on," (Whitman 13-14), as he is talking about the women who were called witches and burned at the stake for being considered practicing devils magic. The Salem witch trials had many women, mothers of children, hated, imprisoned, hanged, and burned; most people did not feel anything for them but to punish, rather Walt Whitman feels bad, maybe even guilty of letting mothers, great women who care for their children, having to die. A unique perspective Walt Whitman has shown the irony in his writing, for the ones who are not seen as heroes, yet he is the one out of many to feel they are not the villains yet the victims of the stories.

What heavily connotative words are used? What words have unusual or special meanings? Are any words or phrases repeated? If so, why? Which words do you need to look up?

A heavily connotative word that Whitman uses is "I". About a quarter of the way through the poem, he switches to a first-person point of view and states, "All these I feel or am. I am the hounded slave, I wince at the bite of the dogs," (Whitman 6-17). Whitman saying this shows that he stands, supports, and connects with the various heroes that he mentions. He continues the rest of the poem in first-person. This puts emphasis on how Whitman feels about these situations. Stating that he feels or is the hero, proves that he supports and feels connected with the different people he describes. Each time Whitman repeats "I" is another example of him agreeing and supporting the people he describes.

What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

The author uses sensory imagery to describe what different heroes' stories look like. Whitman goes into detail to keep the reader engaged. For example, the author states, "I am the mash'd fireman with the breast-bone broken, Tumbling walls buried me in their debris, Heat and smoke I inspired, I heard the yelling shouts of my comrads," (Whitman 26-29). This relates to the rest of the poem because he does an in-depth description of how different situations bring different heroes. A pattern shown throughout the poem is Whitman trying to see himself as various heroes. He switches from a third to first-person point of view and puts himself in different shoes. He puts the reader in what it is like to be in the hero's situation.

What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

The poet describes himself, "They show as the dial or move as the hands of me, I am the clock myself" (Whitman, 36-37), using reverse personification and a metaphor to call himself a clock; describing he is the clock could mean the many heroes he describes in his poem, are the dials and move as the hands on the clock. The heroes are parts of him that cannot leave his body and he will forever understand the feelings of the many who faced injustice or were heroes. The speaker says, "Agonies are one of my changes of garments" (Whitman, 23), showing agony is something he feels quite a lot to the many people describes; though agony is not the only feeling he feels and he has more emotions/feelings that he could change just as he changes garments.
