Benefits and Challenges Reflection

While completing the ICT for teaching in Senior and FET Phase module at TOGI, I was introduced to a platform called Canva, I had the opportunity to learn how to create an interactive infographic using Canva.

This experience has been both beneficial and challenging, and it has had a meaningful impact on my learning. It opened my eyes to a new way to layout information for my learners to use in conjunction with technology.

Benefits:
One of the major benefits of using Canva for creating interactive infographics is its user-friendly interface. The platform offers an array of templates, fonts, graphics, and colours, which allowed me to customise my infographic really easily to suit the topic (Absurdism in Theatre) and purpose (To make the learning of this part of Theatre History more fun and interactive for my learners, seeing as this topic is usually very boring for them, and they hardly ever participated in lessons regarding this topic in the past).
Canva's extensive library of images and icons provided me with a vast array of options to choose from, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of my infographic.

Another significant benefit of Canva is its interactive features. The platform allowed me to incorporate clickable elements such as buttons, links, and Youtube videos into my infographic. This interactivity enables learners to engage with the content actively.

For instance, I could included links to three external websites imbedded in pictures used in my infographic, this helped the infographic appear more appealing to look at and the URL codes of the websites, which where quite lengthy didn’t need to be typed out, which created more space to be utilised in my infographic. This function encourages independent inquiry, critical thinking, and the development of research skills. It allows learners to delve deeper into a topic, access different perspectives, and gain a broader understanding of the subject matter.

The two Youtube video's I added to the infographic were imbedded in the infographic created more of an integrated approach for the learners to access the video's, than just simply clicking on a typed out link. This feature allows learners to access additional visual and auditory resources, enhancing their understanding and engagement with the topic being covered.

Uploading and adding an audio explaining the concept in Canva offers a valuable tool for creating educational materials that cater to different learning styles and preferences. By including an audio recording that explains the concept being presented, the user can provide an additional layer of support and clarification. This is particularly beneficial for auditory learners who benefit from hearing information rather than reading it. It also allows for the incorporation of storytelling techniques or the use of different voices to engage and captivate learners' attention, making the learning experience more dynamic and memorable.

This interactive aspect fosters a dynamic learning environment, promoting student engagement and participation.

Challenges:

Despite its many benefits, using Canva to create interactive infographics also posed some challenges.

One of the main challenges I encountered was the learning curve associated with mastering the various features and tools within Canva. I particularly struggled with incorporating the audio into my design and getting the function to work properly when I downloaded the infographic as a PDF. While the platform is generally intuitive, it took some time and practice to become proficient in utilising all the available options effectively. Another struggle I had to overcome was adding the video’s in a way that was visually pleasing. However, the challenge was worth it as it allowed me to develop a valuable skillset that I can now use to create engaging visual content for my future students.

Additionally, ensuring that the interactive elements functioned correctly when I shared the link was also a struggle I faced. The original link I shared on Moodle didn’t open. It taught me a valuable lesson - it is crucial to test the interactive features thoroughly to ensure they provided the intended user experience. This requires attention to detail and multiple iterations to troubleshoot any issues. However, this challenge also served as a valuable lesson in problem-solving and quality assurance, skills that are essential for integrating technology effectively into the classroom.

Overall, the experience of using Canva to create interactive infographics has had a significant impact on my learning. It has broadened my understanding of the possibilities and benefits of incorporating technology into teaching and learning.

By creating an interactive infographic, I have learned to present information in a visually appealing and engaging manner which I can modify and adjust to suit the current likes and interests of my learners, fostering active participation and knowledge retention among students.

Moreover, this experience has equipped me with valuable digital literacy skills that I can apply across various subjects and teaching contexts.

As a student teacher, Canva has become a go-to tool in my teaching toolkit. It has empowered me to design interactive infographics that can effectively communicate complex concepts and engage learners in a meaningful way. I am excited to bring this newfound knowledge and skill into my future classroom, where I am confident it will enhance the learning experiences of my students.

During our completion of the ICT for teaching in Senior and FET phase module, we had the opportunity to explore the creation of an Edpuzzle using a video directly from YouTube.

Benefits:

One of the significant benefits I experienced while using Edpuzzle was the ability to create an interactive and engaging learning experience for my future students. By using a video from YouTube on the topic of Dadaïsm, Surrealism and Symbolism, I could introduce diverse perspectives, visual aids, and real-life examples that would capture students' attention. The platform allowed me to add questions, comments, and notes throughout the video, ensuring that my learners remained actively involved in the learning process. This interactivity fosters learner engagement and promotes a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Additionally, Edpuzzle's analytics feature provided valuable insights into students' progress and comprehension. The platform offers data on how many times a learner watched a particular section, their responses to the questions, and the overall completion rate. This information empowers us as teachers to identify areas where our learners may be struggling and tailor their instruction accordingly. As a student teacher, this tool has helped me recognise the importance of personalised feedback and the benefits of using data-driven insights to inform instructional decisions.
Adding multiple choice questions, open-ended questions, and notes directly to the YouTube video in my Edpuzzle benefited my learners in several ways when creating educational materials. Here's how each function contributed to enhancing the learning experience:

Multiple choice questions: I added three sets of multiple choice questions which provided my learners with opportunities for self-assessment and reinforced their understanding of the content. By incorporating these questions at strategic points in the video, my learners were prompted to actively engage with the video of the content regarding Dadaïsm, Surrealism and Symbolism and apply their knowledge. This interactive element encouraged critical thinking, decision-making, and the ability within my learners to analyse different options, ultimately strengthening their comprehension and retention of the subject matter.

Open-ended questions: I used three open-ended questions in the Edpuzzle which encouraged my learners to think deeply, express their thoughts, and articulate their understanding of the topics being discussed. These questions fostered higher-order thinking skills, such as analysis, evaluation, and creativity. By responding to the open-ended questions, my learners had the opportunity to explore different perspectives, provide explanations, and engage in meaningful discussions. I also had the opportunity to give feedback to my learners once they submitted their answers to the open-ended questions, which is a way for me to guide their responses in the correct direction.

Notes: Adding three notes throughout the video allowed me to provide my learners with additional context, explanations, or clarifications to their understanding. It also allowed me to focus their attention on specific information from the beginning of the video, which is an important element for me since Dadaïsm, Surrealism and Symbolism can be quite boring for my learners, but function as part of a bigger whole in the 20th century Isms, which is a fundamental part of the Grade 12 Dramatic Arts curriculum. These notes served as supplementary information that enhanced the video content and helped my learners grasp key concepts or ideas more effectively. Notes included definitions and further explanation, however, they could also include further examples, or connections to real-life situations, providing learners with valuable insights and expanding their knowledge beyond the video itself.

The inclusion of multiple choice questions, open-ended questions, and notes directly within the YouTube video in Edpuzzle aided in the learning process of my learners. It fostered active engagement, critical thinking, and self-assessment. This multifaceted approach to learning and assessment promoted a deeper understanding of the topic and enhanced the overall educational experience.

Challenges:

However, working with Edpuzzle also presented some challenges.

One of the main difficulties was finding an appropriate video on YouTube that covered the topics of Dadaïsm, Surrealism, and Symbolism in a comprehensive and engaging manner. Since a lot of videos focused on one of the topics specifically, but not a lot of videos covered all three. There are more than 15 “Isms” that need to be covered in the span of three weeks, therefore it is pivotal for me to cover at least three of them in each new lesson regarding the “Ims”. Sorting through various videos to find one that aligned with the curriculum objectives and my teaching style required time and effort. It emphasised the importance of pre-screening and evaluating the suitability of external resources before using them in the classroom.

Another challenge I encountered was coming up with questions that were both challenging and doable for my learners. As a teacher you always want to encourage your learners to think further and deeper, yet you never want them to feel discouraged and give up trying. I also had to pick my timing in the video perfectly to incorporate these questions and notes as to not break a new chain of thought or a new concept being taught. The three “isms” being covered in the video are quite similar in the aims, so it was important to me not to break a logical pattern of thinking for my learners as they were watching the video.

Overall, the experience of creating an Edpuzzle using a video directly from YouTube has had a positive impact on my learning journey as a student teacher. It has highlighted the potential of technology to transform traditional instructional practices by fostering student engagement, providing real-time feedback, and offering data-driven insights.

The process has reinforced the importance of careful selection and evaluation of digital resources, as well as the need to develop technological proficiency to effectively integrate such tools into the classroom.

As I progress in my teaching career, I look forward to exploring more digital tools like Edpuzzle to create dynamic and interactive learning experiences for my students.

While completing ICT for Teaching in Senior and FET phase module, we had the opportunity to explore the world of interactive presentations using Google Slides.

Benefits:

One of the key benefits I experienced while using Google Slides for creating interactive presentations is its versatility. The platform has a wide range of features and options, I was able to design engaging and visually appealing slides to capture the attention of my students. I could incorporate images, videos, and audio clips related to Greek Theatre, creating a multimedia-rich learning experience. This aided me in presenting the content in a more interactive and dynamic manner, fostering student engagement and enhancing their understanding of the topic. The following are elements we had to incorporate into our slide show along with the benefits I experienced from each:

Embedding a YouTube Video: Including the three YouTube's video directly within a Google Slide presentation allowed me to enhance the learning experience by incorporating visual and auditory elements. This function enabled me to provide an additional explanation, it will also allow me in future to add demonstrations or other examples related to the content regarding Greek Theatre being taught. Learners can in this way easily access and view the video without leaving the presentation, promoting seamless and immersive learning.

Images that Link to Websites: I found that adding the three images to Google Slides and linking them to relevant websites provides learners with opportunities to explore further resources related to the content being taught. By clicking on the images, my learners can access external websites that offer additional information, interactive activities, or supplementary materials without having to go search for the websites themselves, this saves time and keeps my learners focused on the Greek Theatre content at hand. This function encourages self-directed learning and enables learners to delve deeper into the topic, gaining a broader understanding and enhancing their engagement.

Interactive Questions: Google Slides allows users to create interactive questions, such as multiple-choice, true/false, or fill-in-the-blank, within the presentation itself, I opted with adding two multiple choice questions, one on slide 3 and one on slide 12. I found that these interactive questions enables me as a teacher to assess learners' understanding and knowledge retention during or after the lesson. My learners can actively participate by selecting the correct answer and receiving immediate feedback on their responses. This function promotes formative assessment and helps me to identify areas that require further clarification or review. When the learner got the answer correct they could move forward in the presentation, if the got it incorrect they were redirected back to the source of information they had to revise before they could continue.

Tactile Moving Game: While Google Slides does not have built-in game features, we can still create tactile moving games using the various functions available. This can be achieved through slide transitions, animations, and interactive elements. By designing a game-like activity within Google Slides, I can engage my learners in a fun and interactive way, fostering active participation and reinforcing learning objectives. The tactile moving game, which I opted for, involved having the learners drag text-boxes on the screen to the correct answer, however, one could also incorporate tasks like dragging and dropping objects, moving characters on the screen, or solving puzzles, creating an immersive and interactive learning experience. The next slide contained the corrections to the game, which allowed my learners to self-assess their knowledge and understanding.

Overall, these functions within Google Slides enhance the educational materials by adding multimedia elements, linking to external resources, enabling interactive assessments, and facilitating gamification. By using these features, I can create engaging and interactive learning materials that cater to different learning styles of my learners, promote active participation, and support my learners' comprehension and retention of the content.

Challenges:

One of the main difficulties I encountered was mastering the various features and functions available within the platform. While the interface is user-friendly, there is still a learning curve involved in fully utilising all the features and customising the interactive elements effectively. I am quite impatient, and it was a challenge for me to spend time getting to know how all the features work. It took some time and practice to understand how to embed videos, create hyperlinks, and incorporate interactive quizzes seamlessly. I struggled especially with adding a video directly from Youtube, and only later realised that Google Chrome was a better option for me to use as a browser than Safari was. After I switched over to Google Chrome, I could easily add a video directly from Youtube using the search engine on Google Slides. I also received feedback that some of my elements didn’t work correctly, upon further inspection I realised that I needed to revise the links I used to hyperlink the images - yet another result of my impatience.

Another challenge was ensuring that the interactive slide show remained focused on the learning objectives and aligned with the curriculum. It was easy to get carried away with the bells and whistles of the digital tool, but it was important to strike a balance between interactivity and educational content. I had to constantly remind myself to integrate interactive elements purposefully and to evaluate their impact on student learning. Especially since Drama is such a creative subject. It is very easy to get distracted on all the creative elements one can use, instead of focussing on teaching the theory behind Greek Theatre, which is a fundamental part of Drama Terminology.

Creating an interactive slide show on Google Slides focusing on Greek Theatre has had an impact on my learning. It has allowed me to explore the potential of technology in education and discover innovative ways to engage students. The process has encouraged me to think creatively and critically about designing interactive learning experiences that go beyond traditional methods. It has also highlighted the importance of integrating technology seamlessly into the curriculum, keeping the learning objectives at the forefront.

Overall, using Google Slides for creating interactive presentations has been a valuable experience. It has empowered me as a student teacher to leverage digital tools to enhance student engagement and promote active learning.

The benefits of versatility, collaboration, and multimedia integration outweigh the initial challenges, making it a worthwhile addition to my teaching toolkit. I look forward to continuing my journey of exploring and integrating technology in education to create meaningful and impactful learning experiences for my future students.

Creating a video from scratch and then integrating interactive elements required careful planning and editing. It demanded a significant investment of time and effort to ensure the video was clear, concise, and visually appealing. As a student teacher who is also working at a school full time with various responsibilities, time management became crucial to successfully complete this task without compromising other obligations.

Another challenge I faced was technical proficiency. While I do not really struggle with technology as a rule of thumb, I really struggled with the process of recording my teaching in Zoom, at first my audio didn’t sync with the video, which was a system error, so I had to re-record my entire lesson before I was able to use it in the Edpuzzle.

Overall, the experience of creating an Edpuzzle using a video I created myself has been immensely beneficial for my learning journey. It has allowed me to explore the potential of educational technology in enhancing student engagement and understanding. The personalised and interactive nature of Edpuzzle has revolutionised my teaching approach, enabling me to provide meaningful and differentiated learning experiences for my learners.

Although it presented certain challenges, such as time management and technical proficiency, the learning outcomes and the positive impact on the learning of my learners make the investment worthwhile. I am excited to continue incorporating digital tools like Edpuzzle into my teaching practice and explore new ways to leverage technology for effective and engaging instruction.

Prepare your lesson: Create a PowerPoint presentation with the necessary slides and content for teaching the concept. Make sure your Zoom settings are configured to record your screen and audio.

Record your lesson: Open Zoom and start a meeting. Share your screen with the PowerPoint presentation and begin your lesson. Use the record function in Zoom to capture both your screen and audio as you deliver the lesson. Ensure that you cover all the important points and provide clear explanations.

Save the recorded video: Once you've finished recording, end the Zoom meeting. Zoom will automatically save the recorded video file to your designated location on your computer. Locate the video file and make note of its location for future reference.

Import the video to Edpuzzle: Go to the Edpuzzle website (www.edpuzzle.com) and log in to your account. Click on the "Create" button to start a new project. Choose the option to upload a video and select the recorded video file from your computer. Edpuzzle will begin the uploading process.

Add multiple-choice questions: Once the video has finished uploading, Edpuzzle's video editor will open. Play the video and pause at the desired points where you want to add multiple-choice questions. Click on the "Add Question" button and choose the multiple-choice question type. Enter the question and provide answer options. Select the correct answer and add feedback for both the correct and incorrect answers.

Add open-ended questions: Resume playing the video and pause at appropriate moments to add open-ended questions. You can provide a word limit or specify the format for their answers.

Add notes: While the video is playing, pause at relevant points where you want to add notes. Click on the "Add Note" button and type out the note regarding the content of the video. These notes will appear as text alongside the video, providing additional information or guiding learners' attention to important details.

Add a voice-over: If there are specific sections of the video where you feel the need to provide further explanation or commentary, click on the "Add Voiceover" button. Enable your microphone and begin recording your voice-over. Speak about the topic in more depth or elaborate on certain aspects to enhance learners' understanding.

Review and edit: Once you have added all the desired elements, play through the video and review the questions, notes, and voice-over. Make any necessary adjustments or edits to ensure everything is accurate, clear, and aligned with your instructional objectives.

Publish and share: After finalizing the video, click on the "Publish" button. Edpuzzle will process the video and generate a unique link or embed code. You can share this link or code with your students through your learning management system, email, or any other preferred communication channel.

By following these step-by-step instructions, you can create an Edpuzzle using a video recorded with PowerPoint slides and Zoom's record function.
