The Three Crosses of Montornès del Vallès are a historical and cultural symbol in the town of Montornès del Vallès, Catalonia, Spain. These crosses date back to the 18th century and were originally erected as a religious monument, possibly to commemorate a significant event or as part of a devotional tradition. While the exact reason for their installation is unclear, they likely marked a key religious moment or were placed along a processional route.

Today, the Three Crosses are an important symbol of the town’s Christian heritage. They not only represent the town's deep religious roots but also serve as a reminder of Montornès del Vallès' historical development. In addition to their spiritual significance, the crosses have become a local landmark, attracting visitors and tourists interested in the town’s rich cultural and historical legacy.

The Columbus Monument (Monumento a Colón) in Barcelona was inaugurated in 1888 for the Universal Exposition, a world's fair held in the city (Barcelona). It stands at the lower end of La Rambla, near the waterfront, and commemorates Christopher Columbus's return to Spain after his first voyage to the Americas in 1493. Designed by architect Rafael Atché, the monument features a 60-meter tall column with a bronze statue of Columbus pointing toward the sea. The statue was created by sculptor Jeroni Zanné. The monument was part of efforts to celebrate Spain's maritime history and influence. Over the years, it has become a popular tourist attraction. Despite its celebratory nature, the monument has also been critiqued due to Columbus's controversial legacy, particularly regarding his treatment of indigenous populations. Nonetheless, the monument remains a symbol of Barcelona's connection to the Age of Exploration.

Park Güell, designed by architect Antoni Gaudí, was conceived as a residential project in the early 1900s. Located on a hillside in the Gràcia district, the park was intended to feature upscale homes, but the project failed due to low sales. In 1922, the city of Barcelona acquired the land, transforming it into a public park. Gaudí's design reflects his unique modernist style, incorporating organic shapes, colorful mosaics, and innovative architectural elements. The park's most famous features include the serpentine bench, the lizard sculpture "El Drac," and the central plaza surrounded by a colonnaded viaduct. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. Today, Park Güell is one of Barcelona’s most visited landmarks, attracting millions of tourists each year.

Tibidabo is a mountain in Barcelona, rising 512 meters above the city, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. Its name comes from the Latin "tibi dabo," meaning "I will give it to you," referencing a biblical passage where Satan offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world. In the late 19th century, Tibidabo became a popular leisure destination, especially after the opening of the Funicular de Tibidabo in 1901, which made it more accessible. In 1905, the first amusement park in Barcelona was established on the mountain, which still operates today. Tibidabo is also home to the Temple of the Sacred Heart, a church built between 1902 and 1961, with its striking statue of Christ on top. The area has since developed into a significant cultural and tourist attraction, blending religious, historical, and recreational elements. Nowadays, Tibidabo is a little version of a theme park with views to the city of Barcelona.

It's a Spanish and Catalan cultural tradition that consists of walking through the streets (called ‘cercavila’) with figures that represent people but in a very big size, that's why they are called ‘Gegants’. Each town or city has a ‘colla' made up of people who take them out for a walk, called ‘portadors’. Each of these groups has several figures that symbolise the history of their town or city. These figures can be made of many materials that are previously made with moulds and under their clothes they carry trestles that are used by the bearers to move them. It's also a tradition that each ‘colla’ creates dances with their figures and these are performed in the town squares. In the village where I live, they are called ‘Gegants de Montornès’, which is made up of several figures, the most important of which are Bartomeu Sala and Pere Antón de Rocacrespa, who represent the story of a revolt between the king and the peasant. That is why there is a ‘gegant’ of king and another of peasant. In the festivities of our village it's very characteristic what is called ‘the dance of the battle’ which is unique because the figure of the king falls down, representing the victory of the peasant over the king, as a historical fact.

In my village it's a deep-rooted tradition and is celebrated with a lot of fun. The people get very involved in this festival and the ‘collas’ also get very involved in all the events. It's a tradition that is sure to last for a long time.

Tsarevets Fortress, located in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, is a symbol of the country’s medieval glory. Built on a hill and surrounded by the Yantra River, it was the heart of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185–1396) and served as the residence of Tsar Asen and other Bulgarian rulers. The fortress boasts imposing stone walls, towers, and gates that once protected the capital. Its centerpiece, the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension, features stunning modern frescoes.

One of the most captivating attractions is the “Sound and Light” show, a spectacular audiovisual performance that narrates the history of Veliko Tarnovo and Tsarevets with music, lights, and lasers. The site is steeped in history, with legends of secret tunnels, heroic battles, and royal intrigue. A visit to Tsarevets offers a journey back to Bulgaria’s medieval era, making it a must-see for history enthusiasts.

From: Presiyana Moneva

The Belogradchik rocks

The Belogradchik Rocks are a group of strangely shaped sandstone and conglomerate rock formations located on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains near the town of Belogradchik in northwest Bulgaria. The rocks vary in color from primarily red to yellow; some of the rocks reach up to 200 m in height. Many rocks have fantastic shapes and are associated with interesting legends. They are often named after people or objects they are thought to resemble. The Belogradchik Rocks have been declared a Natural Landmark by the Bulgarian government and are a major tourist attraction in the region.

One of the legends is about a schoolgirl and it goes like this - An old legend tells the story of the young maid Latinka and the lad Milotin, and of the hatred of the dervish Abdia. Every evening he stalked them as a beast and in his look were to be seen fury and lust. Abdia understood that he would not attract Latinka because he was ugly, therefore he slandered the young man to be doing rebellious intrigues and the lad was locked up in a cell. In the evening, when Latinka and Milotin had to meet, instead of her beloved one the girl saw the dervish who turned up from the bushes and fastened his fingers on her young body. With one blow the girl broke free and run away. She reached the rocks and because there was no other choice, she started climbing them in order to hide in the cave nearby. When she woke up to the situation, the girl raised her head and saw a meat-eating bear before her. The bear rose to its full height and roared so that the whole valley shuddered. In her fright, Latinka wished to turn into stone. And the miracle happened – everything petrified with one blow.

from: Nadezhda

Devil's Throat Cave, Trigrad

Devil's throat cave is located in the western Rhodopes close to the village of Gyovren in Bulgaria, near its border with Greece. A popular tourist attraction, Devil's Throat branches from Trigrad Gorge.
The cave’s entrance resembles a devil’s head, and down its throat rushes a massive waterfall that from ancient times has given birth to numerous legends.
It is a fact that nothing carried by the river into The Devil’s Throat Cave emerges back from it. Many attempts have been made to track pieces of wood and other material through the cave, but they all vanish without a trace in the underground river. Experiments performed with dyes have shown that it takes more than an hour and a half for the water to traverse the short distance from one opening to the next, fueling speculations about an extensive system of underground streams in the cave.

Nevena
