As a child, Chiron grew up in Liberty City, Miami. He never had a bio father in his life & his mother was struggling with a crack addiction along with prostitution. During his childhood, Chiron was consistently wandering around without parental supervision & a main target for kids his age(and older) to bully him at any game or interaction daily.

His mother was almost consistently away, getting more drugs & more men to get her drugs to ease her & with no fatherly guidance as well, Chiron quickly became shy, antisocial, & defenseless against his bullies. During a horrific prank by his bullies, Chiron was saved by a man named Juan.

Juan quickly becomes protective and an instant father figure to Chiron, giving him life-changing advice about who he can be without judgment, teaching him how to swim, giving him money to keep away from his mother, & other fatherly acts. Juan then introduces Chiron to Teresa, who quickly becomes a motherly figure to him and his real mom to him. They became protective parental figures to Chiron until Juan was killed in a shootout at a drug den after confronting Chiron's mother for leaving him behind. After Juan's death, Teresa took the role of Chiron's guardian, while Chiron's mother would eventually hate her & become more hostile towards Chiron.

Kevin punches Chiron, who keeps getting up from getting jumped by Kevin's "friends." Chiron feels betrayed by Kevin, who is also secretly gay & his love interest.

Chiron's Meeting With A Social Worker:

The social worker urges Chiron to reveal his attackers & press charges, but Chiron refuses.

Chiron's Confrontation With Terrel:

Chiron smashes a chair into Terrel's back.

Chiron's Bully:

Terrel, whose friend group includes Kevin, constantly bullies Chiron in & out of school but reveals some clues about his confusion with Chiron, which has many fandoms questioning if he's into Chiron but firmly in denial by being accused of being gay & pushes his fear on Chiron by bullying.

Chiron's visits to Kevin's restaurant:

Chiron admits to himself that he still loves Kevin after the incident at school & many years later & they share a moment at his restaurant.

Chiron visits Kevin's apartment:

Chiron takes Kevin to his apartment, and Kevin tells Chiron that he has a child from a girl from their school. After a moment of hesitance, Chiron shyly admits that Kevin is the only man who ever touched him & Kevin embraces him at the end of the film, leaving a questionable cliffhanger for the audience to question.

Chiron Finds surrogate parents in Juan & Teresa, who teach him how to live with dignity & other life skills. Chiron's identity seems to be shaped more by Juan & Teresa than by his mother.

Black Men:

Black men are catalysts for Chiron's discoveries & adaptions of sexuality & masculinity.

His Own Identity:

Chiron struggles with questioning his sexual identity & feeling lost. He also struggles with masculinity & homophobia.

His Name:

Chiron's control over his own identity is mirrored in the way he chooses to either shed or grow into his given name.
