In the book, "Grenade" by Alan Gratz, the story follows two young soldiers, Hideki and Ray, during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. Hideki is a Japanese soldier who's assigned with defending his home from the invading American forces, while Ray is a young American Marine who's fighting for his country. The two boys’ are struggling to survive the brutalities of war and are both dealing with their own fears and intolerance toward each other. Then Hideki and Ray find themselves in a dangerous situation when they're both transferred on a mission with a grenade. As they navigate the unfaithful land, they encounter numerous obstacles and troubles. The story becomes more violent as the two boys struggle to complete their mission and survive the horrors of war. Later, Hideki and Ray's paths cross again, but this time, they're on opposite sides of the conflict. The two soldiers are forced to defy each other in a battle that will determine the outgrowth of the war. As the fighting intensifies, the story of both boys fighting to survive and coming to terms with the harsh realities of war. The war comes to an end, and Hideki and Ray's fates are revealed. The story concludes with a conversation about the cost of war and the significance of empathy and understanding.

If you look at this photo and then read the book it will help so you can understand more of the book. This photo is representing the army on the way to war. This is like the book because it talks about Okinawans going to war. It helps you understand more of what the story is like.

Some things that are a like in this article and Grenade are when they show when they were invading, how where they were, and how long the war was. Some of the differences were that in Granade it only showed one perspective and one time and in the article, it just showed the overview of the whole thing not just one side. In the book, they have characters who bring feelings and dialogue that the article does not have. They are very different but also a little the same.

It's different because soldiers are supposed to be strong and brave but these characters were demonstrated as scared and weak. This is extremely conflicting with the time period.

One theme readers may pick up on while reading the book Grenade by Alan Gratz is, that war is destructive and devastating and has the ability to change people. The best example is the chapter where Hideki and his group have to pass the Americans at the end. There are numerous examples throughout the book as Hideki and Ray are forced to kill, which is not something they'd normally do. Masako is pushing Hideki to use the grenade, but he is hesitent because he fears it will enrage the Americans and make them into something they aren't. “ No,” Hideki said. “...if we attack them, we’re their enemy. When they’re not under attack, when they’re not afraid, the Americans are human beings...It’s the same with the Japanese….The machine gun nest back there, it didn’t have two monsters in it. It had two human beings. But if I threw this grenade at them, they would have turned monsters.” (230) This quote shows that even in the face of death and the opportunities given to kill, Hediki consistently refuses because he holds onto the hope that people are truly still good. That is a change and conflict with the character and the time period.

Another theme that could commonly be interpreted in the book Grenade, is the power of hope and courage. It could go into the depth of the role that it plays in survival. In the chapter titled Sute-ishi Hediki has a run-in with his father. His father is in terrible condition, and he might not make it based on the way and where he is. As he lies on his deathbed he utters, "No one is coming to save us, Hediki. That's why you have to save yourself and find your sister." (82) This Quoteshows the beginning of Hedikis hope, which leads to courage in the war. It shows that with the right passion and thought that you are doing something right, you can accomplish what you want even if ethically it seems like not the right. Later in the book Hediki finds his sister through all of the tough perseverance, and they break away from her post along with the children. They are free.

This image is of Japanese high school girls waving farewell to a Japanese pilot departing for Okinawa. This connects to the book because the families in the story are split up and in this photo, there are people departing and separating from their original home to go and fight for their country and home. This is significant because it shows the hope in the girls' eyes that this specific person will affect the outcome of this horrific war.
